It is overly simplistic – foolish even – to talk about vacations only in the context of going to (un)familiar locations to rest and escape from the conundrums and challenges of daily life. It is why travel trends are a thing and also why they are rarely ever the same each year. Apparently, this year, wellness seems to be topping the luxury travel trend chart again, although experiences are the overarching desire of the average voyager, especially younger travellers.

You might be a travel veteran, but it doesn’t mean you find trends completely useless, especially if it feels like you’ve done it all. Per Mckinsey, only 17 per cent of respondents out of 5,000 surveyed said they use a travel agent. Others rely on family and friends, search engines and social media to plan their trips, which means you’re more likely to follow trends even when it is done unconsciously.

Now, whether or not you care about what’s hot on the travel scene or not, here are some interesting suggestions from vacationers worldwide that appear to have provided real value for their money and time. Maybe you’ll find them useful, maybe not. But ultimately, they are worth checking out for the kind of excitement they promise to bring to your trip, whether you are going solo or in a group.

Exploring the stars at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea

Hawaii might not top the list of the best luxury travel destinations, but, like everywhere in the world, it offers some unique, unforgettable experiences. Like the Four Seasons Resort Maui Unforgettable Experiences.

a guide pointing out the southern cross is part of the luxury experiences travelers today enjoy
Astrology lovers would find The Wayfinder Journey from Four Seasons Maui very useful. Image courtesy of Four Seasons Resort Maui

The resort promises a range of activities, from exploring a local town and its sights to going on a coffee-tasting date. The Wayfinder Journey, however, is perhaps its most unique package, because it takes you on an educational exploration of the Southern Cross, a constellation that can only be spotted in Hawaii. You would be taught everything from its cultural significance to the local community, to learning how to use it as a navigation tool when you’re out on the waters. And because celestial navigation is quite the work, you would end your course with a multi-course meal by Four Seasons Maui Chef Samual Taganeca onboard the catamaran.

Activate your five senses with Ker & Downey Africa’s Five Senses Experience

It is very easy to think Africa = Safari, but, just like Ker & Downey is out to prove, there is so much more to this continent that is extremely rich in culture and tradition, than rare and exciting animals.

Going on a wellness-infused tour of Asia via the Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train

If you’ve never tried a luxury train vacation before, perhaps it is time to, especially with the launch of the Dior Spa on the Eastern & Oriental Express.

Dior Spa on the Asia and Oriental express is a worthy luxury experience on your next travel

Having a luxury spa experience onboard a train is not something you’d normally expect, so this is definitely one to try out. A range of rejuvenating and relaxing spa treatments abound, like the Asian-inspired D-Jungle signature treatment, the Constellation tension-releasing massage, and the luxurious Kobi-Dior facial treatment. Dior would also have its Prestige skincare range available for purchase so that you can keep up a luxury care routine long after the journey has ended.

Learning to cook like the experts at the Royal Mansour Marrakech

Not only is the Royal Mansour one of the top luxury hotels in Morocco, it is now angling to have one of the best culinary workshops in the Kingdom of Light.

When planning a vacation, if you’re anything like me, the final choice usually hinges on four factors: familiarity, affordability, accessibility (especially if visas are a hassle), and popularity. But by sticking to these criteria, you might miss out on some of the world’s most enchanting destinations, like Morocco—an amazing country with delightful tourist spots.

It is easy to miss out on places like Morocco when planning a vacation because it does not fit neatly into the common criteria for top vacation destinations. Image courtesy of Elektra Klimi on Unsplash

Rather than simply listing cities, monuments, and must-see attractions in this traditional North African gem, I invite you to join me as I reminisce about my recent unforgettable 5-day vacation in the Kingdom of Light. I recommend that you grab a cold drink first to be able to keep up, as I packed in A LOT into this 5-day trip!

Day 1: Arriving in Casablanca

Our Moroccan adventure began in Casablanca, where we arrived at noon on June 1st. I had deliberately chosen to keep my eyes and mind open, free of preconceived ideas, so I could truly explore with fresh eyes. My first impression of Casablanca was that it was charming and sophisticated, a city where ancient Moroccan culture coexists perfectly with modernity.

After clearing immigration, we were warmly welcomed by the Moroccan Tourism Board, who escorted us to a luxury bus that would be our primary mode of transportation for the remainder of our trip

Tip: If you’re considering group travel to Morocco, skip the taxis and opt for a luxury bus and chauffeur. It adds a unique flair to the entire trip.

We arrived at our first hotel, a stunning 5-star establishment in the heart of Casablanca. Once settled, we were whisked to the hotel’s spa for our first Moroccan experience: a rejuvenating hammam session at the spa.

Tip: When you visit Morocco,  make sure a visit to a hammam is on your list.

What’s a day in Morocco without trying the gastronomical delights on offer? Although, in Casablanca, it was a mix of local and continental.

Our first day ended with delicious cocktails on the hotel’s rooftop, where a DJ played Nigerian songs in the background— as everyone bopped and swayed to the beats. It was a nice feeling that made our evening even more special.

Day 2: Exploring Tangier

Day 2 began with a quiet but quick breakfast at 7 AM, as we had an early departure for Tangier. By 8:15 AM, we were at la Gare de Casa, the train station, ready for our 2-hour trip to Tangier. While a 7-hour road trip sounds appealing, it would have disrupted our itinerary, so we opted for the faster train option.

The interior of the Casablanca train station looks more like a luxe shopping mall than an actual train station

We arrived in Tangier just before noon, and the welcome in Tangier was quite different from Casablanca’s floral greeting. Here, we were served mint tea and traditional Moroccan sweets by staff dressed in traditional attire.

Our guided tour took us to several popular spots, including the Cape Spartel Lighthouse, the Petit Socco, the Kasbah, and the Medina. One thing that stood out was the uniformity in design. Our guide explained that Moroccan craftsmanship is deeply rooted in the culture and preserved through generations. The intricate designs in a newly-built 5-star hotel could be identical to those in a historical museum like Dar Niaba. While it might seem monotonous after a while, appreciating the hand-crafted details that have endured through the ages gives you a deep respect for this cultural heritage.

when you visit morocco, you'll have unlimited access to mint tea
One thing you can never run out of in Tangier? Mint tea.

Our tour included a visit to the spice and herbal section of the market, where we could choose spices and herbs for customised medicine, skincare products, and perfumes. Watching the skilled men, mostly in their late 50s and 60s, quickly formulate products using techniques passed down through generations was a testament to the rich cultural preservation alive in this ancient kingdom.

Making herbal skincare products is as simple as selecting what you want and leaving the rest to the men who have seen and done it all, some for decades.

Our day ended with a drive through the vibrant town to a charming restaurant, where we indulged in Moroccan delicacies and wine, ending our second day on a delightful note.

Day 3: Enchanted by Chefchaouen

With our tour of Tangier complete, we journeyed to Chefchaouen, known as The Blue Pearl. This enchanting city, with its thirteen gates and predominantly blue colour scheme, is a sight to behold!

The streets of Chefchaouen, Morocco
Even the skies are dazzlingly blue in Chefchaouen

Seeing the city in pictures is one thing; but standing on its cobbled streets, basking in the brilliance of the sun, and taking in the stunning scenery is a completely different affair. The blue and white hues make you feel like you’ve stepped into an alternate universe. The architecture, the people, and the vibrant atmosphere bring the city to life, making you feel instantly invigorated.

In Chefchaouen, we experienced our first Moroccan wedding, which was one of the most beautiful ceremonies I’ve ever attended. Everything from the clothing and jewellery to the oud songs sung by the women celebrating the bride was remarkable and decadent. It made me wish I were more than just a spectator!

Beef tagine i had on the visit morocco trip
The beef tagine was a delightful surprise!

It was also in Chefchaouen that I tasted my first tagine, a delectable beef-filled dish that I won’t forget soon …

Day 4: The Road to Marrakech

We bid farewell to the enchanting city of Chefchaouen in the morning and embarked on a journey to Marrakech via Tangier and Casablanca. This was my first opportunity to experience a Moroccan road trip, and I can assure you, it did not disappoint. The scenic drive showcased the diverse landscapes and vibrant culture of Morocco, making it an unforgettable experience.

Tip: When you visit Morocco, be sure to include a road trip in your itinerary.

Day 5: Farewell Adventures in Morocco

Our vacation in the Kingdom of Light was coming to an end, and we decided to pack in as much fun as possible before our departure scheduled for later in the evening.

Hot air balloon view of the sun rising over Marrakech
Trust me, this image does not do ANY justice to the wonderful view of the sun rising over Marrakech.

We started the day at 5:45 AM with a hot air balloon ride, hoping to catch the sunrise. If you’ve never tried hot air ballooning, it’s a must-do. Initially, you might cling on for dear life, but as you ascend, fear gives way to sheer exhilaration, and you’ll wonder why you were ever afraid.

After touching back down, we were off for some quad biking. At this point, we were fearless and eager for more adventure. I opted to ride with a guide, but if you’re more daring, you can ride solo. Don’t worry, you’ll be equipped with all the necessary safety gear, and help is always nearby in case of emergencies.

The ceiling at the museum of confluences in Marrakech
One thing that stood out in all the cities we visited was the architecture and the elaborate designs, all handcrafted, inside the buildings, from the ceilings to the walls and even the floor tiles.

As if quad biking wasn’t thrilling enough, we thereafter hopped on camels for a more traditional experience. This slightly hair-raising adventure is one I recommend if you’ve never tried it; I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Having had our fill of adrenaline, we returned to our hotel to freshen up before heading back out for one last exploration: the Museum of Confluences, Dar El Bacha. The museum offered a feast for the senses with its stunning architecture, intricate wall, ceiling, and floor designs, exquisite woodwork, and a coffee shop featuring beans from around the world that brew for a minimum of two hours. (Yes, you read that right. Two hours.)

coffee shop at the dar el bacha, Marrakech
Want to know what coffee from different parts of the world tastes like? I guess you have to visit Morocco!

Alas! All good things must come to an end, and soon it was time to pack our things and head back home. As we were chauffeured to the airport, I felt waves of bittersweet emotions. While I was happy to be returning home, I didn’t want the magical Moroccan experience to end. This just means I’ll be back again soon, because as anyone who has been will tell you, 5 days is grossly inadequate to take in its beauty.

Tip: You simply must visit Morocco – The Kingdom Of Light!

If you live outside of Africa and casually mention that you were visiting, the first remark would probably be, “Oh, you’re going on a safari?” But, as most Africans will tell you, there’s so much more to see and experience on the continent than our unique animal life in southern and eastern Africa. Such as Morocco, the North African country bordering the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea, known by its famous moniker, ‘the Kingdom of Light.’

A traditionally-dressed server at the Hilton Tangier
Morocco is a very traditional country with ancient practices, fashion and culture still alive today

Morocco is truly one African nation to explore if you haven’t done so already. Not only is it choke-full of interesting places to visit — Morocco is famous for preserving ancient traditions in every aspect of their lives from architecture to food, and even style — but there are so many things to do and see that we daresay a 2-week stay is barely enough to get acquainted with whatever city you choose to visit, talk less of the entire country.

Fresh from our Moroccan trip, here are some places that really intrigued us and we believe offer a good starting point to an exploration of the Kingdom of Light.

The Hassan II Mosque, Casablanca

Very cliché in terms of where to visit, but if it’s your first time in the country, it pays to start with a popular and important landmark as it serves as a great foundation of what to expect on your Moroccan adventure.

The storied mosque that took about seven years to build and thousands of hours of labour features mostly local materials and craftsmanship. Its strategic position by the Atlantic Ocean and just a little above it adds further appeal to its magnificent size and impressive craftsmanship.

The Hassan II Mosque

Thousands of stories and articles on one of the largest mosques in the world with one of the world’s longest minarets abound, and it can almost feel like you’ve been there without having actually ever visited. But, unlike other popular tourist destinations, it is truly one place you must see for yourself to fully understand how beautiful and special it is.

Hammam

Whether you are in Marrakesh (Marrakech if you prefer) or Casablanca, the one activity you cannot afford to miss is the traditional Moroccan Hammam, which is why it gets a special place on this list.

The rest area in the Hammam at the Sofitel
A typical Moroccan Hammam consists of different rooms, including a rest area like this.

The Hammam is basically a spa experience that starts in a dry hot room, then moves on to a hot, steamy room, which then gives way to a bathing room, and ends in the resting room, or, in some cases, goes on to yet another room, the massage parlour, where you receive a full body massage that melts away whatever stubborn stress might remain after this truly blissful experience.  You’d thoroughly enjoy the amenities and treatment from seasoned practitioners with decades of expertise using centuries-old local Moroccan practices, soaps and oils.

Tangier

For most visitors, Casablanca may not have much to offer beyond the Hassan II Mosque and other smaller tourist attractions, but not Tangier.  This ancient medina, which is the meeting point of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, is the perfect place for limitless exploration, and when you want, blissful relaxation.

The high speed train connecting Casablanca to Tangier
The high-speed train connecting Casablanca to Tangier was inaugurated by King Mohammed VI in 2018.

Tangier is a  7-hour road trip from Casablanca, but, to get there faster, a 2-hour train ride from La Gare Casa would suffice.

Once there, you can choose to explore the Kasbah, a historic fortress and palace, housing the Dar Niaba museum, which showcases the city’s history and cultural artefacts. Or, if you would rather just sit back and take in the city, the Petit Socco, also known as Souk Dakhli, is the place to go. The Grand Socco, on the other hand, is a vibrant, bustling public square, surrounded by historic buildings, cafes, and shops, so should you get bored, you can easily hit the stores to buy everything from clothes and shoes and even prepare your unique body oil with whatever herbs, seeds and nuts of your choice.

Sweets and nuts at a souk in Tangier, Morocco
Sweets and nuts in the souks are locally-produced, and rarely imported

The Cape Spartel Lighthouse is one landmark you do not want to miss while you’re in Tangier. Situated at the northwestern tip of Africa, where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean converge, this historic lighthouse, built in 1864, stands majestically on a rocky promontory, its shining bright beam guiding ships and travellers alike.

The Cape Spartel Lighthouse in Tangier, Morocco
The Cape Spartel Lighthouse is a confluence of two great seas and is as historic as it is symbolic

The Lighthouse is not only a marvel of engineering but also a sacred site, mentioned in the Qur’an and the epic poem, Ulysses by Homer. In the former, it is called the ‘Ras al-Tubul,’ marking the western extremity of the known world while Ulysses describes it as the ‘Pillar of Hercules,’ symbolizing the gateway between Europe and Africa.

Chefchaouen

You’ve probably heard about the picturesque blue town of Morocco, but Chefchaouen is more than its blue-and-white aesthetic. Its rich history, intentional architecture that preserves decades-old tradition and culture, and, very traditional cuisine that includes the tagine, a slow-cooked stew, all come together to make for a truly authentic, luxury experience like no other.

A sign at Chefchaouen, Morocco
The colour blue is significant in Moroccan culture as it is believed to ward off evil spirits.

Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a fortress to resist Portuguese invasions. The blue you see everywhere is intentional, as, in Moroccan culture, the colour is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring peace. This beautiful fortified medina, with its twelve gates and narrow streets, offers the best of Moroccan warmth and hospitality, and even if you do not get to visit other popular cities like Marrakech and Tangier, the one place you absolutely do not want to miss on your first visit is the very beautiful, very traditional, and very charming city of Chefchaouen.

Marrakech

Last on our list is Marrakech, and honestly, if the theme of your vacation is ‘busy days and countless media,’ Marrakech should probably be the starting point of your Morrocan adventure.

shoes at the dar el bacha museum marrakech morocco
Artefacts showcasing the local craftsmanship at the Dar El Bacha Museum

There’s so much to do and see that a week in Marrakech would probably be grossly inadequate. From the museums — like the Dar El Bacha, La Musée des Confluences — to the souks, to the public buildings open to tourists, to the different tourist activities like quad biking and camel riding, you’d never run out of things to do and places to see. Also, the architecture and craftwork, especially in the Medina, is simply stunning and breathtakingly beautiful.

camel riding in Marrakech
Camel riding may not be a novel idea, but it is worth trying out in Marrakech.

Even if your goal is to have a very peaceful Moroccan vacation, it would not hurt to add Marrakech to your list of places to visit, even if it is just for a day or two. The experience would definitely be worth it.

It is impossible to have a definitive definition of the word, luxury, but a consensus exists:  to be considered luxury, a product or service must be exclusive, emotive, and expensive, amongst other things. For the 0.1% today, however, these are not enough. Current trends indicate that the ultra-rich consider luxury, especially in the services industry, to be an array of distinctive solutions crafted to solve their unique challenges. Hence the rise of hyper-personalisation and exclusivity in the world of luxury.

Hyper personalisation and exclusivity in luxury travel

First-class cabins used to be considered the pinnacle of luxury travel, but all that changed when airlines started offering points and rewards to frequent flyers, and the exclusivity it once promised all but vanished. Private jets quickly filled that position and became the better option for wealthy passengers seeking relative comfort and privacy.

inside Etihad's Residence, an exclusive and high-personalised suite for the affluent
Commercial airlines with options for the ultra-rich ensure that exclusive and highly customisable options exist, like Etihad’s The Residence. Image courtesy of Fortune

With sustainability at the top of everyone’s minds today, affluent travellers are returning to commercial airlines. But not necessarily to first-class cabins. These are now almost non-existent and have been replaced by premium accommodations and upgraded business-class spaces that offer better privacy, more ‘à la carte’ options and increased comfort thanks to newer technologies. For example, Etihad’s exclusive Residence and Emirates’ private suites, both of which employ the latest tech and trends to enable passengers personalise their cabins however way they feel best.

Per Deloitte, travelling via a superyacht is the most preferred means of transport for the very rich because of the exclusivity it offers, in addition of course to other benefits which include “high-end interior design to bespoke onboard services and amenities … [that allow the rich unfettered access to] the highest form of privacy and personalisation.”

Hyper-personalisation and exclusivity in the hospitality and tourism industries

The hospitality industry has been rather quick to embrace the concept of hyper-personalisation, offering distinct solutions ranging from targeted messages aimed at different customer segments to incorporating novel tech that allows guests to customise their rooms to their tastes. Some hotels and resorts even suggest local and authentic activities and attractions via a dedicated app; others include special requests from guests, like getting a particular chef to provide meals throughout their stay.

The boathouse at the Four Season Private Residences Lake Austin
In a nod to the times, branded residences, like the Four Seasons Private Residences Lake Austin, are on the rise, offering the very rich all the exclusivity, luxury, and hyper-personalisation they need on their vacations. Image courtesy of Four Seasons Lake Austin

But for the very affluent, even this is not enough.

It is not enough to sleep on the most exquisite bed surrounded by the finest luxury amenities. High-end wellness packages, designed to improve everything health-wise from sleep to mindfulness are the new normal.

It is not enough to enjoy the finest local cuisine: cooking classes from Michelin-starred chefs; wine pairings featuring unique ‘boissons’ from small, domestic chateaux; and bespoke culinary experiences tailored to each guest’s individual needs are now on the menu for the ultra-rich.

Family vacations may still be in, but for affluent travellers, multi-generational travel or large-group vacations with loved ones are on the rise, leading to an increased demand for exclusive, fully-staffed villas and hotels, private residences, bespoke camps, and, standalone suites. Large group travel also means an uptick in the demand for exclusive yacht charters and private jets.

Exclusive and hyper-personlised luxury adventure expeditions for the rich are on the rise
Experiential adventures in remote, secluded locations offer a great appeal to well-seasoned travellers with bottomless pockets. Image courtesy of The Telegraph

And what do you give to an experienced traveller who has been to almost every country in the world? Perhaps a private safari and a chance to have a one-on-one encounter with the animals; or trekking the iconic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with a dedicated guide, or even camping and experiential expeditions in Antarctica are in order.

Hyper-personalised and exclusive luxury services

As the ultra-rich engage in a race against time to balance all the aspects of their very busy lives, getting their hands on limited-edition products, highly-coveted-yet-restricted luxury goods or even putting together the itinerary of a different kind of trip is a mission-impossible task.

Enter the specialists experienced in solving this challenge.

fashion sourcers are helping luxury shoppers get products they would not ordinarily get on their own
In fashion, sourcers offer luxury shoppers hyper-personalised and exclusive shopping experiences. Image courtesy of Saclab

In the luxury beauty and fashion world, these specialists have chosen to be known as Fashion Sourcers, per Vogue. Fashion sourcers are upgraded personal shoppers who ‘offer a fresh, hyper-personalised retail model for luxury’s top spendersproviding almost 24-hour, one-stop-shop luxury retail, with virtually no limits, all via Whatsapp or Instagram DM.’

When the affluent need a Birkin 35 in ebene Barenia calfskin leather and palladium hardware, instead of suing Hermès when they cannot get their hands on one, they simply engage the services of a trusted fashion sourcer who is sure to get one from their vast network of connections globally.

A bespoke luxury travel specialist provides an equally sought-after service in the travel and hospitality industry. Like every other person, the very rich have their quirks, and even more so since they have the funds to make them happen. But not even they can put together a ridiculously unusual vacation on their own; for example, go on a holiday modelled after a particular action movie and get the same cinematographer who worked on the film to cover your trip and produce a video just like the movie.

While there is an increased clamour from aspirationals and outsiders to democratise luxury, stakeholders who truly understand that this can never be the case are creating more barriers to entry, making modern-day luxury more exclusive and hyper-personalised than ever before.

Tuscany is famous for its food, views and wine, and is set to become the destination for women seeking a haven to be themselves. Image courtesy of Tourist Italy

Tuscan Break is the brainchild of Liz Bomben, an international makeup artist who fell in love in Italy when she first visited back in 1987. After several trips, Bomben decided that she wanted other women like her to explore the region in relative comfort and safety, and thus, the idea was born.

Crafted for women over 35, the all-inclusive, week-long homestay experience caters to just five to six guests at a time and can be customised to accommodate special occasions such as birthdays or reunions. Guests will enjoy a truly immersive Tuscan holiday instead of a non-personal, touristy experience. Each homestay will expose visitors to the intricacies of local food, culture, leisure and landscapes, and will comprise authentic Italian experiences, from sipping drinks in the Piazza or people-watching on market day, to sunset rounds of bocce, wine tastings and cooking classes. A stroll through the picturesque villages with gelato in hand is also on the itinerary.

Other perks include transfers from the Florence train station to the homestead and back; daily breakfast and five lunches (for a seven-night stay); cooking classes; wine and olive oil tastings at local wineries, and, village tours. Guests who will be staying at Tuscan Break from September 2 to 9, 2024 can choose to participate in the annual wine festival in Greve, Chianti, while food writer and photographer Emma Bickley will also be joining several homestays throughout 2024 to provide insights into the culinary arts.

If a very local Tuscan holiday in the company of other women sounds like your idea of fun, then you should head over to Tuscan Break’s website to make an enquiry.

What is it like jetting all over the world, curating incredible travel locations and experiences that excite some of the world’s biggest celebrities and wealthiest personalities? This pretty much sums up Cleo Anderson’s job.

Cleo Anderson is busy as always. The founder of The Anderson Media Group was recently declared the ‘Broadcast Media Host and Producer of the Year’ in the Influential Businesswoman Awards 2023, just as she wrapped up filming in St Barth – the latest location for her show on LUXE.TV, Wanderluxe with Cleo Anderson.

Cleo Anderson is the founder of Anderson Media Group
Cleo Anderson is a seasoned PR and travel expert whose experience has seen her work with some of the world’s ultra-wealthy

And she is not done. Her multiple roles as travel expert, PR guru, TV host and producer mean that she has to constantly be on the move in search of some of the most glamorous yet hidden locations in the world for her clients. Some of which are/have been Monte Carlo SBM; the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Ms Anderson is the ‘Luxury Travel Curator of the Everyone Wins Goodie Bag’ dished out to the top 25 Oscar nominees each year), and now, LUXE.TV.

We caught up with Cleo in between her travels to talk about her work and views on luxury travel, amongst other things.

In Conversation with Cleo Anderson begins now …

ALM: Why have you declared St Barth the ‘world’s most luxurious island?’

CA: St Barth is such an iconic location and has a long history of attracting those who love laid-back chic as well as the jet set – it really is a jewel of the French Caribbean. The island is lush with nature and beautiful beaches, but you also have fantastic shopping in Gustavia and some really wonderful iconic landmarks in terms of eating out and places to stay.

In the show (Wanderluxe with Cleo Anderson) we featured three stunning villas courtesy of Saint-Barth Paradise. I enjoyed dinner and drinks at Eden Rock, and I spent some amazing hours on some of the landmark beaches. Filming there really was a fantastic experience and I will no doubt visit again soon.

ALM: What, in your opinion, do you think luxury hospitality brands get wrong about what the 1% need in a vacation spot?

CA: I think the thing most people get wrong is what great customer service and attention to detail really is, because, for me, there are most definitely levels to it.

Often in hospitality, people think they are giving personal service by being polite – perhaps remembering your name – but they are not really seeing you or listening in any meaningful way. For me, what makes the difference is not just noticing a client or being polite, but actually acting on what you have noticed in a significant way.

hand carrying a champagne glass
Luxury hospitality is so much more than being polite. Image courtesy of Alev Takil on Unsplash

One example of great customer service was during a recent visit to the Four Seasons Sultanahmet in Istanbul. I really couldn’t decide between sorbet or chocolate for dessert during a meal. I chose the sorbet and after I finished my meal, I realised that I was still craving chocolate. I playfully lamented my decision to my wonderfully attentive server and, to my surprise, he returned with a couple of pieces of gourmet chocolate – on the house. It is these personalised touches that truly make an experience special and memorable, and making a client feel seen where many servers would have simply sympathised politely and brought me my bill. That feeling of really feeling ‘seen’ and catered to is what I think the 1% is looking for.

ALM: What are some emerging trends in luxury travel that should be talked about more?

CA: Obviously artificial intelligence (AI) is a big conversation right now: in terms of luxury travel, that equates to more detailed hotel booking where you can customise room size and check-in times, for example. Face recognition and voice recognition at airports for added security will become more prevalent, I believe. I also feel that luxury trains will become more popular – this is something that I’m really interested in, and I’m currently planning a couple of epic train trips in both Europe and North America. I’m looking forward to these unique experiences.

ALM: What, so far, are your favourite vacation spots and why?

Santorini courtesy of cleo anderson
I am always in search of accommodation with an iconic view that reflects the place I am in

CA: Athens is a favourite — I really enjoy places that have a sense of history to immerse myself in, and Athens has historical landmarks that you can see from almost every vantage point in the city. Juxtaposed with that you have the Athens Riviera. It’s very close to the city centre but is also a stunning beach destination that many don’t really know about.

I loved Miami, it has a South American vibe in terms of the music, food, colours, and beautiful weather. It is a really fun spot to go to with a group of friends.

Borneo was a wonderful destination to explore, as I am big on nature and wildlife. Tracking in the rainforest and searching for Orangutans was really beautiful.

The Maldives is another favourite spot. I love being surrounded by water, and the colour of the Indian Ocean is magnificent. I loved being in an overwater bungalow: at night you can feel the bungalow swaying in the water. Being there feels decadent [because] you have space and time to deeply relax.

ALM: What are some vacation spots that are best visited alone in your opinion? Which ones are best visited in company with others?

Faro punta cumplida lighthouse in spain
I consider location when curating vacation spots for clients

CA: For me, when it comes to city breaks I actually enjoy doing them alone. You can do your own thing and discover museums and hidden gems on foot and at your own pace. Athens, Barcelona, Lisbon and Rome are all great for getaways like that. Then the party places, like Miami and Tokyo, are wonderful to do with company as your senses are heightened and there are just so many things to do.

ALM: What unusual luxury spots have you been to?

CA: Cappadocia in Turkey. The terrain is so unique and special and the hotel was a cave-like haven with views of hot air balloons floating up into the sky in the mornings.

ALM: What do you look out for when searching for a place to stay?

If I can get an iconic view that reflects the place I am in, that’s always a plus. If that is not a possibility, I love an elegant room. I usually like a mixture of contemporary and traditional furnishings and gorgeous interior design. Customer service is also really important to me, and I will always look at the reviews to see how other travellers have been treated by staff.

ALM: What are some challenges you’ve faced in your travels? What did you do about them?

CA: I have to be honest – my travel experiences are typically great. I did, however, face a challenge with retrieving luggage when I arrived in St Barth’s earlier this year and it was the first time I have ever lost my luggage! Thankfully, the staff at the hotel where I was staying went above and beyond to track my luggage down and ensured that I received it a day later. There had been an issue at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

ALM: According to the news, you’ve put together unique travel destinations for top Oscar nominees. What do you look out for when making these selections?

Cleo Anderson in front of the Egyptian pyramids
Non-Africans need to be made aware of the beautiful things to see throughout Africa – Cleo Anderson

CA: I’m definitely looking for something glamorous and unique. We have worked with lighthouses that have been transformed into hotels, for example, and we definitely have the glamour factor this coming year with a selection of high-end luxury villas in St Barth. I also tend to look at locations; what are the locations that perhaps Oscar nominees might want to visit? This year, aside from St Barth, we have also been looking at Sri Lanka and Berlin.

This past year we had a client with an ultra-modern compound in the middle of nowhere (in Dunrobin, Canada), which was a fantastic addition to the gift bag.

ALM: What is the one thing/principle you’ve applied over and over again that has helped to keep you successful in your line of work?

CA: Remaining positive and expecting good things. The power of positive expectation is key. I believe in asking for what you want and expecting that you will attract the right people to help you with that mission. Resilience is a must in business too: you will always find blocks in the road, but it’s about pushing past them and finding another way.

ALM: What would you like to see more in Africa to make it a top travel destination?

CA: I think that more unique luxury hotels in unique places that showcase the beauty that Africa has would be fantastic.

Hot air balloons floating over cappadocia
Cappadocia is an unusual luxury spot with its unique and special terrain. Image courtesy of Thrillist

ALM: What do you think non-Africans need to experience here on the continent to make Africa a top travel destination?

I think that non-Africans have to be made more aware of the beautiful things to see throughout Africa, and the experiences that maybe they are not yet aware of. African countries that have got this really right in terms of branding are Kenya, with their safari experiences; Namibia, with its stunning desert; and, Egypt with its obviously iconic pyramids. Ensuring that other African spots showcase what they have may come from a more focused PR and marketing push, for example, with the visuals being at the centre of everything. With social media tools like Instagram, everything is more visual these days and people can’t be aware of something they know nothing about. More awareness of what to see and do would be great.

The premium offerings onboard airlines’ first class cabins are seemingly unlimited, and range from Michelin chef-crafted dishes and exclusive wines to very creative amenity kits stocked with the best skincare essentials from top luxury brands; luxury accessories for in-flight entertainment; exclusive temperature-controlled cabins with lie-flat seats; bathrooms with shower stalls and bidets, amongst others.

For frequent first class passengers, choosing to fly commercial does not mean sacrificing all the luxe comforts they are accustomed to, and airlines do not hold back in providing all the premium benefits that keep them coming back. But sometimes, premium can be quirky, and some airlines have proven that even this is not a challenge with their unusual first class souvenirs which they sometimes extend to their business class cabins.

KLM’s Delft Blue House

No story of unusual first class souvenirs would be complete without the mention of KLM’s gin-filled ceramic delft blue houses, a truly collectible item that manages to give physical and psychological benefits all at once.

KLM House no 48, the Rembrandt house
KLM’s Delft Blue houses are the oldest unusual souvenirs from airlines. Image courtesy of KLM

Since 1952, KLM Dutch Airlines has remained consistent in giving out these miniature gin-filled houses to passengers in its premium cabins. Although the houses have retained their blue-and-white signature colourway as well as the Delftware pottery style associated with the eponymous Dutch city since the mid-17th century, production times and the manner of obtaining them have evolved.

“Production was random until 1994,” explains a KLM representative. [Back then] a number of houses were produced one after another, then none for several years. An extra 15 houses were produced in 1994 in honour of KLM’s 75th anniversary. This brought the number to exactly 75 and the number of houses in the series has kept pace with KLM’s age ever since.”

Today, there are a total of 103 houses, which are now released on October 7 each year to mark the airline’s birthday. Each house has a unique story: for example, house 103 is a miniature of the Ecury House in Oranjestad, Aruba, the family home of the Ecury family that contributed significantly to the development of aviation in Aruba.

Passengers in KLM’s business class get ‘served’ the houses before the plane lands. Image courtesy of KLM

How do modern-day collectors grow their stash? In a nod to the times, passengers in the airline’s business cabin visit the dedicated Delft Blue Houses app once the flight attendants come out with the ceramic souvenirs on trays. There, they will cross-reference the numbers on the back of the houses on display to ensure that they’re only adding a fresh model to their collection.

It is not certain who has the most houses in their collection, but, per KLM, houses No 76, 48, and the earliest houses 1-10 are some of the most sought-after pieces among collectors.

Lufthansa’s Rubber Ducks

Lufthansa may not have the storied history of KLM’s Delft houses, but its rubber ducks are certainly more unusual than gin-filled ceramic replicas of historic homes.

Lufthansa allows its first class passengers take a rubber duck as souvenir
Lufthansa’s rubber ducks for its premium flyers may be the quirkiest first class souvenir yet. Image courtesy of One Mile At A Time

According to the word flying around, it all started around 2004 when the airline opened its first class terminal in Frankfurt. One of the perks was the shower suites, and in the one with a bathtub, someone had thought it wise to place a rubber deck there. But then it was taken, and the airline replaced it. And then it got taken again and was replaced again, until the airline realised that passengers really love their rubber ducks, and so they turned it into a souvenir first class passengers could take home with them from the lounge.

So far, Lufthansa has decked its first class terminal with different types of ducks. There have been Christmas ducks, Oktoberfest ducks, FIFA World Cup ducks and even coronavirus ducks!

The lufthansa ducks on display are part of unusual first class souvenirs airlines give
Starting your own Lufthansa duck collection is as simple as asking for one on your next trip. Image courtesy of One Mile At A Time

If you would love to start your own Lufthansa duck collection, the process is rather simple. Just visit the airline’s first class lounges in Munich or Frankfurt, and request your own squishy gift from the assistants. They would be more than happy to grant your request.

Emirates’ collectable toys and bags for young flyers

Emirates’ offering isn’t so quirky, but their latest first class souvenirs are not so common, and so they deserve a spot on this list.

Unlike the other two airlines on this list, their collectible amenity kits are not for all passengers flying premium but are reserved for their young passengers only, up until the age of 12.

Emirates’ amenity kit is a collectable pack for kids. Image courtesy of Emirates

Made from sustainable materials, the kits are grouped into three: the first is for babies 0-2 years and is geared more towards the parents than the child. It includes a reusable changing mat, diaper cream and cleansing wipes, a keepsake wipe-clean bib, a soothing vibrating plush toy and collectable ‘blanket buddies’, where an Emirates character soft toy representing a pilot or cabin crew is offered alongside a soft blanket to ensure a sweet night’s sleep. All these are in a colourful bag with hand-drawn artwork representing “the people, places, and cultures that Emirates airline serves in its global route network of 140 destinations.”

The kit for kids aged 3-6 years is way different. They are given a multi-use belt bag, larger backpack, or generous duffle bag that contain an engaging ‘Fly with Me’ activity pack with its colouring pencils, kid-friendly world maps, puzzles, drawing tutorials, colouring pages, educational activities about Dubai and protecting the environment.

The artwork-covered bags from emirates can be considered unusual first class souvenirs
Emirates does not do quirky, long-time gifts, so the fact that these bags would only be available for a fixed period of time makes them rather special. Image courtesy of Emirates

For children between the ages of 7 to 12, they would be walking off the flight with reusable belt bags, larger backpacks, or generous duffle bags – designed with subtle and cool graphics that appeal to their age group.

The next time you’re on any one of these flights, look out – you just might be walking off with a quirky, lifelong artefact that might become a family heirloom. And if you would not be flying with any one of these anytime soon? Ask the attendants at the first class lounge or those in-flight. Who knows? You just might be walking off the flight with your own unusual, collectible souvenir.

There is a new, shiny kid on the private jet block that is hoping to change the business of flying private, and, if history is anything to go by, then the newly-introduced Gulfstream G800 will successfully do just that.

What is special about the G800?

The corporate aerospace giant, Gulfstream, has since 1958 produced more than 3,000 aircraft that have somehow managed to meet the needs of private jet travel even before the industry had anticipated it. Maintaining this position as the leader of the corporate jet niche, the American company has now introduced the G800, an extended-range jet that should eventually replace the G650ER.

The gulfstream g800 in the skies

The G800 is a straight-up, long-range private jet designed with the fastest and best range in the world to perform best at high speeds and cover long distances efficiently. Although it shares a common fuselage with the G650ER, the G800 includes an award-winning Honeywell Symmetry Flight Deck that has revolutionised business aviation with vast improvements in safety and efficiency.

The g800's flight deck

It also comes with active control sidesticks – an industry first; increased nonverbal communication between pilots through tactile cues; ten touch-screen displays – the most extensive use in business aviation – that work in sync with Phase-of-Flight intelligence to reduce the number of switches in the flight deck; and, dual head-up displays aka the Combined Vision System (CVS) that unites in a single image the Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) and the Synthetic Vision System (SVS). These merged displays have the double advantage of increasing pilots’ situational awareness as well as improving their access to more airports.

Seating arrangement on the plane
Buyers have the option of choosing between a 15/16 seating arrangement, or a larger 17/19 alternative (pictured here). Image courtesy of Gulfstream

Although designed for an 8,000 nautical miles endurance at Mach 0.85, the G800 still manages the 7,000 nautical miles range at Mach 0.90 and boasts of a staggering ability to conduct the same 8,000 nautical miles trip in less than half an hour thereby saving up tons of money. Freshly designed aerodynamic wings were added to the existing fuselage of the G650ER, and, with advanced avionics plus the Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engine, a new powertrain designed to propel travellers to their destinations faster while efficiently utilising fuel in a single fuel tank was born.

What does this mean for the future of business/private jet travel?

It is said that the G800 can link you nonstop to more destinations around the world than any other business jet in less time. As the aphorism goes, time is money, and with this new aircraft, the greatest gift you gain is time.

The cabin of the new private jet
Every part of the Gulfstream G800 has been outfitted with the highest-quality materials for the best comfort during flights. Image courtesy of Gulfstream

Away from time and fuel efficiency, the interior of the G800 has an elegantly designed interior cabin outfitted with the finest materials for convenience and comfort. In-cabin air is purified every 2-3 minutes with a plasma-ionisation clean air system, allowing passengers to enjoy a pleasant atmosphere throughout their trip, whether they are working, socialising or sleeping.

At approximately $ 71.5 million, the G800 is not the most affordable private jet on the market. However, as the saying goes, nothing good comes easy. In relation to the G800, we are adding ‘and cheap’ to the end of that statement.

At the mention of (luxury) all-inclusive resorts, seasoned travellers groan and roll their eyes and stop their ears.

Or that is what the word on the streets would have us believe; although, most seasoned travellers would baulk at the mention of an all-inclusive vacation, and for good reason. Apart from the obvious which is that this kind of holiday can be terribly restrictive if you’re planning to spend more than a week(end) on your trip, it is clearly a bad idea to offer well-travelled vacationers a package that would keep them cooped up in a resort for the length of their trip with the only options of entertainment being drinking, eating, partying and beach walks to spice things up.

villa in the luxury all-inclusive hurawalhi resort maldives
From snorkelling to dining underwater, the Hurawalhi resort in the Maldives is a luxury all-inclusive option that is definitely worth a trial. Image courtesy of the Hurawalhi Resort

But, all-inclusive resorts are not altogether bad, and even if you’ve travelled to different places every year since you were born, even you can admit that there are times when you want to change environment, sit back and relax without a single care in the world. And, with luxury all-inclusive hotels offering a bit more than their counterparts, maybe it is time to look at this travel niche a bit differently.

If you’ve thought about going on this kind of vacation someday, but are a bit confused as to whether it would be worth the spend, here are some positives all-inclusive luxury resorts offer that could help you make up your mind

They take away the stress of planning activities for your vacation.
View of the tongabezi lodge by the zambezi river
Safaris, like the Tongabezi Lodge Zambia pictured here, are always a good option for luxury all-inclusive holidays. Image courtesy of andBeyond

Let’s face it: even if your primary reason for taking a vacation is to unplug from the rest of the world and just relax, it may get old quickly if all you do for the week is sleep, eat and watch movies or read a book. This would be an especially bad idea if you are not the indoorsy type.

Luxury all-inclusive resorts and packages tend to offer a range of activities on and off-site that not only help you to truly relax but allow you to explore your host community while taking you on an adventure that makes your trip truly memorable. And the best part is: you don’t have to think about it. All you need to do is decide whether or not you would participate in the scheduled activities!

They immerse you easily into the culture of the place you are visiting
The Lanai cultural and heritage center
Some all-inclusive resorts arrange tours to the surrounding community, like the Four Seasons Sensei Lanai which arranges tours for guests to tourist attractions in Lanai, Hawaii. Image courtesy of Go Hawaii

One major complaint about all-inclusive resorts is how far removed they are from their local communities. People who have stayed in them have noted how even the meals served do not reflect the cuisine of the area.

Luxury all-inclusive outfits have tried to address this by offering experiences that introduce guests to the culture of the community. Some of these include cooking and language classes, as well as other activities away from the resorts that give visitors the opportunity to experience life in the surrounding area.

They let you try out foods and other experiences you may never have discovered on your own

This is because all-inclusive luxury resorts have made efforts to introduce a wide range of meals prepared by world-renowned chefs and expand the activities that guests can get involved in onsite.

Yes, you could discover all these while wandering about on your own, but isn’t it better to have it done for you?

It is easy to meet new people at these resorts
Guests at the Fairmont Mayakoba Resort Mexico
Group activities at luxury all-inclusive resorts give you the opportunity to meet and interact with new people. Image courtesy of Fairmont Mayakoba Mexico

This is especially true if you’re partaking in group activities. But even if you were not, being cooped up in one place with a bunch of other humans means you’re more likely to bump into the same people over and over again.

If part of your resolution is to meet someone new on your travels, this is more likely to come true at an all-inclusive resort.

What to note first before choosing a luxury all-inclusive resort

It is always best to discuss what exactly you want out of your trip with your travel advisor or agent. Do you want to stay on the property for the duration of your vacation or would you prefer to go out and immerse yourself in the surrounding community? Are you looking for a private, exclusive experience or would you rather mingle with other guests? What does a luxury all-inclusive experience mean to you?

Woman on the deck of the luxury all-inclusive kokomo private island beach

Luxury all-inclusive resorts have evolved over the years to meet the demands of their clients, and even if you may have heard horror stories about them, you may want to create a space for them on your travel list. Just make sure that you have a proper discussion with your travel agent first before you make a decision so that you get the best of what this type of vacation has to offer.

The journey will start on November 30, 2024, when the 450-passenger vessel will depart from Barcelona. It will then cross the Mediterranean Sea, stopping in a few North African and Middle East destinations, including Egypt and Israel. From there, it will traverse the Suez Canal and head for the Indian Ocean nation of the Seychelles.

The next port of call is a portion of the East African coast that includes Kenya and Tanzania, with a stop in Madagascar, from which the ship will return to the coast and sail to South Africa. Next up is the long journey northward along West Africa’s coast, which includes a detour to the islands of Cabo Verde, before a final leg through the Strait of Gibraltar that brings guests back to Barcelona.

In all, the trip will take passengers to 44 ports in 26 countries over the course of three months.

Sailing on a luxury cruise ship isn’t the only activity passengers will be involved in these 90 days. At each port, guests would have the opportunity to go on safaris, hikes, dives, visits to archaeological sites and multi-day excursions to inland destinations, including Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls. There would also be snorkelling visits and cultural immersions at other stops.

According to Natalya Leahy, president of Seabourn, “This voyage is the perfect opportunity for our guests to discover Africa’s stunning natural wonders and diverse cultures while enjoying the uncompromising luxury and intuitive, genuine service that can only be experienced on Seabourn.”
