If you’re spending more time in your favourite luxury auto than in your home, perhaps it is time to consider why. Do you love the thrill of the engine vibrating under you as you tear across highways and rough terrains? Or, are you so in love with the entirety of your vehicle that you cherish your quiet moments together, choosing to let yourself wander as you’re enveloped in its warm, cosy interior? If it’s the latter, then you should consider modelling your home decor after your favourite luxury auto.

In the last decade, luxury auto firms have pivoted sharply into real estate, opening up everything from skyscrapers to private homes. Now, you may never get to own a slice of real estate from your fave luxury auto brand, but, who says you have to? If auto-tuning businesses are a thing, custom-built homes based on luxury auto concepts can surely exist.

Wondering how to pull it off? Here are some things to consider

Consider the brand’s DNA

It goes without saying that every luxury auto brand has its unique DNA, philosophy and identity that defines it, and, if you’re absolutely in love with a marque, you most likely resonate with its beliefs and core values.

Let’s say you love Ferraris. You most likely love bold colours and designs that reflect power. Or, if Porsches are more your thing, you might be an adherent of quiet luxury with the occasional bold accents.

The new Aston Martin logo.
Before modelling the interior of your home after your favourite luxury auto, consider everything the brand stands for and see how you can adopt that. Image courtesy of Aston Martin

Should you choose to design your home or space after your favourite luxury auto, the first rule is to consider what the brand stands for and see how you can incorporate that into your home design.

Choose a specific model. Or not

Just considering the brand’s DNA might not be enough to give you the complete look you desire, so your next step is to list the specific model (s) you love from your chosen brand.

So say you adore Rolls Royce, but not all its models truly fascinate you. The design idea for your living room can come from elements in the Black Badge Wraith, and you can narrow things further in your bedroom by incorporating details from one of its unique models, like the Arcadia.

2024 Porsche Panamera can serve as the bases of your luxury auto-inspired home decor
Copying ideas off a unique model (that you may or may not own) can help bring your decor idea together nicely. Image courtesy of Auto Evolution

Tying design elements and choice of materials to specific models of your favourite luxury auto brand can help to give you a more interesting, creative and cohesive outcome.

Materials, materials

Here’s one truth about true luxury brands: quality materials are everything. From the richest leathers to the softest fabrics, luxury auto brands always ensure that every material put together to make their vehicles is not just premium but offers the best comfort and evokes the best positive emotions that money can buy.

Customers can customise based on leather grades and colours
Want a luxury auto-themed interior home decor? Only premium materials are allowed. Image courtesy of Bugatti

Which is exactly what you have to do when designing your luxury auto-themed home. From soft leather sofas to chrome door handles, luxurious wood accents and flooring, every material used and piece added has to have the same level of premium quality as your dream auto.

Craftsmanship

Experienced and meticulous craftsmanship is another factor that sets true luxury autos apart, so get ready to invest in the services of the best in the field if you want your home to look anything like your luxury car.

Without the right craftsperson to put it all together, your luxury auto-themed home project will not see the light of day. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

Custom-built furniture is a must, as are handcrafted items like rugs and accents. Experienced artisans who are extremely detailed are also necessary to help bring your dream to life.

Include the fireworks

What’s a luxury car without the wow factor?

To get the perfect finish on your luxury auto-themed home, make sure to include standout features that tie the entire vision together, like dramatic lighting for example, or a feature wall, or even contrasting accessories and accents that would elevate the entire design and start conversations every time someone steps into your space.

Spending time with what you truly love is important, but, so also is spending time with who you love. Your beloved luxury auto should take you home and not away from it. If you find yourself spending more time in your car than in your home, then maybe it is time to bring it in with these outlined steps which is a good starter guide to designing your home interior after your favourite luxury auto.

The BMW Concept Skytop is a beautiful example of what happens when design meets engineering and both respectfully allow the other to be the star of the show. Not even the most acerbic critic of the brand has a bad word for the concept auto.

And while there are [understandably] questions about performance and remarks on how BMW can improve on future designs, the consensus is that the German auto brand has finally caught up with the rest of the luxury auto world in creating vehicles that look like true luxury pieces.

But maybe there is more to this concept auto than a desire to prove that the BMW brand is still luxury.

side view of the BMW Concept Skytop
The unveiling of the BMW Concept Skytop may be the brand’s way of re-positioning itself as a serious player in the world of luxury autos. Image courtesy of BMW

Since 2017, Rolls Royce has offered the tail series as a highly-exclusive, coach-built model to its most select, loyal and discerning customers. These ultra-limited, custom-built models may have not been the source of the highest revenue for the brand year-on-year, but they have succeeded in placing the British brand as an undisputable producer of the most desirable-yet-uneasily-attainable luxury autos in the world.

Mercedes Benz has now caught on. In Monaco, this month, the German-born auto firm unveiled the first model in its newly launched exclusive Mythos series. The marque, the Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed is an F1-inspired (which means, among other things,  no windshield) SL-based open-top, two-seater that the brand has said is a “strictly limited series of 250 units will only be available to the most dedicated Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts and collectors.”

Ariel view of the new BMW concept
The Concept Skytop may not go into production, but just may inspire BMW to take coachbuilding a tad more seriously. Image courtesy of BMW

And now, BMW appears to be trailing this same path with the unveiling of its Concept Skytop, a unique auto that is almost like nothing it has ever done. Although it does not seem like it is interested in creating a limited-edition series for the lucky few — in its official press release, the brand stated that “perhaps unique vehicles will not always have to remain unique – at Lake Como and the Concorso d’Eleganzaa Villa d’Este, automotive dreaming has always been allowed” — per Car and Driver, only 50, or possibly 100, of the Skytop would be produced as the vehicle is intended to be a ‘handbuilt collector’s item.’

To be fair, custom-built cars have always being a thing. However, creating special models geared towards a few is a trend that is beginning to catch on in the world of luxury autos. It just may have something to do with the increasing hyper-personalisation and hyper-exclusivity of luxury, which may be due, in part, to an increasing demand of luxury goods from a new generation of rich millennials and Gen Zs unwilling to maintain the tradition of scarcity, exclusivity and long waitlists and times that have characterised luxury from the beginning of time.

Mercedes Concept AMG Purespeed
Like BMW, Mercedes’ latest Concept AMG Purespeed would be restricted to a few loyal clients of the brand. Image courtesy of Mercedes Benz

By restricting certain creations to only loyal clients and friends of the brand, luxury auto companies can safely maintain scarcity and exclusivity without irking new customers who do not want to be told that their interest in a product does not automatically translate to a free pass to everything and anything they desire from the brand. Becasue, whether we choose to admit it or not, the moment luxury goods become accessible to the general public, it may no longer be considered luxury.

The age of hyper-exclusivity has dawned, and luxury auto brands are showing us exactly what it looks like.

It has been only a few weeks since Rolls Royce officially sent off its V12 engines in the specially-crafted Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow, and while it is not the first automaker to do this, the way it chose to go about this process, right from the creation of the last engines to their final unveiling is truly remarkable, just like the marque itself.

The anterior of the Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow

The Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow is an incredibly beautiful mixture of art and automotive engineering, and there would have to be something terribly wrong if you do not stop and stare every time you see one. But there is literally more to this vehicle than meets the eye, and, when you peel away all the layers of rich history wrapped around its existence, you will come to appreciate the depth of ingenuity Rolls Royce put into the creation of its final V12 coupé.

The Black Arrow is the last Rolls Royce Black Badge Wraith
In addition to housing the last V12, the Black Arrow will also be the last Wraith in the Black Badge series. Image courtesy Rolls Royce

So, if your business is looking to retire a product but is loathe to do it quietly – like it never existed or impacted lives – here’s a quick breakdown detailing how Rolls Royce brilliantly sent forth the V12 in a way that is reminiscent of the saying, ‘gone, but never forgotten.’

Choose the right version of the final product

To send forth a truly powerful engine that once stood as a symbol of power and engineering excellence in the automotive world, Rolls Royce decided that the Wraith in the Black Badge series would be the best model for the job.

A unique gradient colourway was used on the car's body
Every single aspect of this beautiful marque tells an intriguing story. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

The Black Badge is Rolls Royce’s more powerful marque, designed to be bolder, sexier and more powerful than its other models. It is also arguably the marque where some of its more creative innovation comes to life.

Craft the right story

As we stated earlier, Rolls Royce is not the only luxury automaker to retire its V12 engines. Only last year, BMW announced that it would be making its final V12, months before Lamborghini would announce the retirement of its own version. Bentley has also said it would be ending production of its V12 by April 2024, and, in the following months, we may see more luxury auto manufacturers make this kind of announcement too.

Part of the car's controls
Actually, the Black Arrow tells the story of the Thunderbolt, a 1930s racing car that employed a Rolls Royce V12 engine to win one of its races. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

But, so far, only the British auto brand has managed to weave a truly compelling and intriguing story around its last V12s that turns the Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow from a newsworthy product to a desirable and collectible item certain to become the pride of any collector and a hotly sought-after, must-have treasure for future auto collectors.

The constellation headliner in the Black Arrow
Per Rolls Royce, this is no ordinary headliner: the Constellation Headliner recalls the stars that light up the night sky above the Bonneville Salt Flats. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

You see, the Black Arrow is more than just a car – it is a symbolic custodian of the history of the life and times of the Thunderbolt, the 1930s land speed record-breaking car designed and driven by Captain George Eyston. During its lifetime, the Thunderbolt would set three land speed records and its last victorious attempt is the major inspiration for the design of the Black Arrow.

This technical engraving of the Wraith’s V12 engine pays homage to the Rolls Royce double R-type V-12 aero engines which powered the Thunderbolt to its last-ever victory. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

The details of that historic race make an appearance everywhere. For example, the vehicle’s unique colourway, celebration silver and Black diamond with yellow accents, represent the black paint and yellow circle motif that had to be painted on the Thunderbolt’s aluminium body back in 1938, when the time-measuring equipment used could not distinguish between the superfast car and the bright sunlit salt flats where the race took place. Then there is the crusty-looking design on the interior door panels which depict the crusted Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, home of the final race of the Thunderbolt’s short career.

Even the dashboard’s clock does more than tell the time. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

Other allegorical details abound and can be found on the dashboard — which houses among other things, a clock that references the analogue instruments of the 1930s, and below it, the inscription, 357.497mph, the final record-breaking speed set by the Thunderbolt on September 16, 1938 — the headliner and the front passenger seats.

Create it for a select few but let it have mass appeal

Only 12 examples of the Rolls Royce Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow have been and will ever be produced. To further bestow upon it special status, the marque was fitted with a 6.7L twin-turbocharged V12 platform, modelling the engine design of the earliest Rolls-Royce examples. An exclusive bespoke polished metal plaque, inscribed with the V12 monogram in bright yellow, and the words ‘Final Coupé Collection’ in black, graces the engine cover to signify this as the last V12 ever to be fitted to a Rolls-Royce coupé.

The plaque on the engine lets you know that this is the last Rolls Royce V12, in a coupe at least. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

And no, not just anyone would be able to purchase this ultra-luxurious and limited auto: at the time of its announcement, the Black Arrow had been allocated to select clients worldwide.

Rolls Royce is clearly on a roll. Nearly three months after the news of a possible new bespoke model dropped, the British luxury automaker has lifted the curtains on the Spectre, its first fully-electric vehicle.

The Rolls Royce Spectre

Rolls Royce is not the first luxury auto brand to have an EV model. BMW has the i-series, and Porsche has the Taycan. But, over the years, the British brand has managed to create truly luxurious and spectacular marques that its entrance onto the EV scene is a big deal, as big as the size of the tyres on the Spectre.

This first truly luxury EV is a coupe
The Rolls Royce Spectre is a coupe, rather than a limousine or an SUV, which, considering the fact that it is an EV, is the right choice. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

Rolls Royce will have you know that, although it is not the first luxury brand to have a fully-electric model, the idea itself is not s stranger to the brand. In 1900, Rolls-Royce co-founder, Charles Rolls, bought an electric vehicle named The Columbia Electric Carriage. His experience with it caused him to say, “The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration. They should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged.” Charging stations have been around now for more than a century – after all, the early electric vehicles had to be charged – so, what stopped Rolls Royce from entering the fully-electric space since?

“The customers always said: it has to be a Rolls-Royce first, electric second,” explains Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

The grille is wider than any other on a Rolls Royce marque
The grille on the Spectre is the widest ever put on a Rolls Royce. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

Apparently, Rolls-Royce has now found the sweet spot between luxury and sustainable solutions.

From the outside, the Rolls Royce Spectre resembles the image of the yet-to-be-confirmed Droptail, but, until the latter is brought to life, it is safe to say that the Spectre retains the physical structure of a typical Rolls Royce while still being different enough to be a truly unique marque.

For starters, the Rolls Royce Spectre is a sleek coupe, perhaps so designed to make it fast enough in spite of its weight. It retains the Greek Temple grille, but this is wider than any other grille on a Rolls Royce. The reason for its massive width is not to cool the engines but to reduce drag which it achieves with its smoother and flusher vanes.

The rims of the spectre are a staggering 23 inches
This is the first-production two-door coupe to be equipped with 23-inch wheels in almost 100 years. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

Like the Phantom, the Spectre has been fitted with split headlights with daylight running lights on top and the main lights below which protrude from darkened chromium housings that give them a smokey, enigmatic look. When it is dark, the grille softly lights up with 22 LEDs illuminating the sandblasted rear side of each of the vanes, further conferring upon the coupe an air of luxury. Its 23-ich wheels take it from a mere luxury EV to a luxury coupe that is not to be messed with.

The doors of the Spectre feature the starlights
For the first time on a series marque, the British brand extended the starlight features to the doors. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

Inside, the luxury theme continues. For the first time on a series production Rolls-Royce, Spectre is available with Starlight Doors, which incorporate 4,796 softly illuminated ‘stars’. If you would rather not have so many lights in your vehicle, you can go with the option of wood Candel Panelling. Don’t worry, you would not miss out on much: the passenger side of the dashboard is fitted with the Spectre nameplate surrounded by a cluster of over 5,500 stars.

Spectre comes with a digitalised dashboard named Spirit that manages its functions and is seamlessly integrated into the marque’s Whispers application, allowing clients to interact with their auto remotely, and receive live information curated by the marque’s luxury intelligence specialists. Clients can choose to customise the colour of the dials to complement the interior hue of their EV, which includes seats that have a ‘lapel,’ a dart of upholstery that gives another option for contrast detailing.

The dashboard of the Rolls Royce Spectre is digital
The dashboard has gone digital in the Spectre, although certain analogue dials remain. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

According to Rolls Royce, the entire design of the Spectre was inspired by different arts including haute couture, modernist sculpture, nautical design, tailoring and contemporary art. In conceiving the principal sketches for Spectre, the marque’s creatives were drawn to modern yacht concepts, specifically the clarity and precision of line, intelligent use of reflection and application of taper to emotionalise silhouettes.

The Rolls Royce Spectre will run on BMW’s latest cell type, uniquely shaped to fit the marque’s floor. The motors too come from BMW, the EESM type that uses no rare earth metals and is efficient at high speeds. It is expected to have a range of 320 miles/520 kilometres and should achieve 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds). With a four-wheel steering system, adaptive dampers, air springs and a Planar system that enables the wheels of the vehicle to act independently on imperfect roads, owners are assured of a smooth, truly enjoyable ride.

The ‘lapels’ on the seats of the Spectre will give clients even more customisable options. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

The Rolls Royce Spectre is set to hit the market in Q4 2023, and in spite of its starting price tag of $413,000, Müller-Ötvös has confirmed that more than 300 US buyers have paid the initial deposit even before they saw the EV. Like Müller-Ötvös, it is possibly clear to avid enthusiasts of the brand that “Spectre is the most perfect product that Rolls Royce has ever produced.”

When the Rolls Royce Sweptail was unveiled back in 2017, it was easily the most expensive and unique auto of its time. 5 years and another bespoke model (the Boat Tail) later, the Sweptail has clearly lost its coveted title. And, with a possible new unique model, the Droptail, dropping soon, it is clear that this first one-of-one model from the Rolls Royce Coachbuild department just may have lost this position forever.

A new patent, a new bespoke Rolls Royce ‘Tail’?

On July 20, Rolls-Royce filed a patent with the European Union Intellectual Property Office for the word ‘Droptail.’ While it was not clearly specified whether this would be the name for a new one-off model, judging by the iconic ‘tail’ in the name, and the corresponding image, it is safe to say that the Droptail is the next generation of custom Rolls Royce to be created by its in-house coachbuilding department.

For Rolls Royce, the ‘Tails’ are the height of bespoke luxury
The Rolls Royce Sweptail
The Sweptail was the first custom-built model from the Rolls Royce coachbuilding department. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

If you walk up to Rolls Royce to make a custom order, you have two options. You either get the standard bespoke commissions, where the British auto marque will create a one-off version of an existing model like the Ghost or Cullinan with your choice of paint, leather, light, headliner, and coachlines. This option is popular with multimillionaires and the very wealthy.

For the ultra-rich however, there is the option to create a custom auto from the ground up based on the Rolls Royce Phantom. The autos in this category, which all carry the ‘tail’ suffix, are usually one-off creations. The 2017 Sweptail was made for just one client, while the Boat Tail, which debuted in May 2021, was limited to just three copies, with the last possibly dropping in 2023.

When will the Rolls Royce Droptail, well, drop?
The Rolls Royce Droptail
The Boat Tail took four years to build. The Droptail may take as long. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

Judging by its predecessors’ production time, it will not be anytime soon.

Both the Sweptail and Boat Tail took about four years to build, and the Droptail might take just as long.

What is more certain is that when it is finally completed, it will be a spectacular representation of the tradition of luxury bespoke coachbuilding, just as the other ‘tails’ before it.

The Rolls Royce Cullinan is a beautiful vehicle, just like any other marque the British luxury automaker has produced over the years. And if you think this model could not get any more desirable, Klassen’s armoured makeover is here to prove you wrong.

The Rolls Royce Cullinan by Klassen is a fully-armoured vehicle that comes complete with a full suite of security features to keep passengers safe. According to the tuner, the Cullinan riff offers a ballistic protection level of CEN 1063 BR6.

In other words, the hard-wearing ride has been outfitted with armour strong enough to shield against deadly weapons. The reinforced ceiling and floor can withstand the full force of two DM51 hand-grenades exploding simultaneously while the multi-layer bulletproof glass holds up against fire from a high-powered rifle. The special overlap system, meanwhile, ensures bullets are unable to penetrate the door seals.

The ballistic protection also extends to the battery and electronic control module and continues with reinforced door hinges, upgraded suspension and run-flat tires. Despite all of this, the elegant exterior remains true to the original, with a Spirit of Ecstasy sitting proudly atop the British marque’s trademark Parthenon-shaped grille.

Under the hood, the armoured brute retains the original’s 6.7-litre V-12 that’s good for 563 hp. This is enough to propel the five-seater from zero to 60 mph in just 5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 155 mph – more than enough time to make a quick escape should you find yourself in danger.

The interior back seat of the Rolls Royce Cullinan by Klassen
The interior retains important elements of the original Cullinan, even though you have the option of customising it according to your taste. Image courtesy of Klassen

The interior maintains its sheer luxurious look, with the Cullinan’s Starlight headliner alongside its 1,344 individual twinkling fibre optic ends remaining untouched. However, Klassen is offering customers the chance to further customize the upscale cabin with an array of high-end materials.

With an upgrade like this, this vehicle is sure to cost a pretty penny. A regular Rolls Royce Cullinan starts at roughly half a million. Klassen’s armoured version is almost double that and priced at around $962,000 (€833,000 including taxes). Not a bad deal if you also consider that it takes up to three months of painstaking work to complete.

Rolls-Royce wants you to rack up your ‘host with the most’ badge at your next private party and all the ones that will come after. The luxury automaker, whose unquestionably exquisite skills are well-respected and well-known in the industry, has unveiled the latest addition to its Connoisseur’s Collection: the Rolls-Royce Cellarette.

The whiskey and cigar chest has been designed to reflect the Rolls Royce ethos of precision engineering, exquisite hand craftsmanship and a breath-taking presentation of luxury. Its different compartments were carefully put together to perfect any soiree, providing clients with effortless and affable hosting opportunities. The brand promises that the Cellarette will both surprise and delight those who encounter it.

“The Rolls-Royce Cellarette, the latest addition to the Rolls-Royce Connoisseur’s Collection, offers our clients new ways to enhance their lifestyle beyond the experience of their Rolls-Royce motor car. Historically, Cellarettes were used to secure wine and spirits. This bespoke chest can be configured to stow aperitifs or digestifs, dependent on the client’s preferences, alongside prized cigars, in a spectacular fashion,” says an official statement from the brand.

The elegant exterior features a polished aluminium chassis surrounded by embossed Rolls-Royce Havana leather. It comes with an Obsidian Ayous Open Pore veneer serving tray with Spirit of Ecstasy inlay, that, when opened, reveals a warm interior.

This interior is lined with Armagnac leather highlights which is further accentuated by a soft light, evoking the atmosphere of a distinguished Members’ Club. An array of beautiful accessories are revealed in a mechanical fashion, mirroring the opening of the coach doors of a Rolls-Royce motor car. Once unfurled, the client is presented with hand-blown lowball glasses, each exquisitely finished with the ‘RR’ monogram. These glasses rotate outwards as the unit opens, evoking a charming sense of theatre.

In unison with the glasses, a magnificent Armagnac leather-lined bottle pannier is revealed. The ‘RR’ embellished holder can adapt to different bottle sizes, with the bottle held in place magnetically by a polished aluminium fastener, ensuring safe stowage of any one of the client’s preferred refreshments.

On the opposite side is the humidor containing a cigar tray. Cigars are nestled in Spanish Cedarwood at the chosen humidity level for optimum enjoyment, a measure that is precisely monitored by a hygrometer. Featuring unique detailing, the hygrometer recalls the hands of the fabled Rolls-Royce clock.

But that is not all. The humidor also packs the perfect accessories for cigar enthusiasts. Magnetically held at either end of the cassette are two smaller containers – one for an intricately detailed cigar cutter and lighter, made by S. T. Dupont, Paris, and engraved with the Spirit of Ecstasy Expression, and the other for an ashtray. To ensure compact transit, the ashtray’s cigar cradles extend only once the container is opened.

The Rolls-Royce Cellarette starts at £40,570 and is available for purchase in all Rolls-Royce dealerships. It can also be customised to your exact specification, just like any Rolls-Royce product.

Rolls Royce is not a newcomer to the world of aviation: it has always been known for its jet engines. However, in a new turn of events, the British luxury auto manufacturer has announced the completion of the maiden voyage of its all-electric aircraft.

Aptly named the ‘Spirit of Innovation,’ the one-seat aeroplane took off from the UK Ministry of Defence’s Boscombe Down site and flew for approximately 15minutes, a flight that “marks the beginning of an intense flight-testing phase in which we will be collecting valuable performance data on the aircraft’s electrical power and propulsion system,” explains Rolls Royce in an official statement.

The plane flew using a 6,000 cell battery pack that delivers “400kW (500+hp) electric powertrain with the most power-dense battery pack ever assembled for an aircraft.” Rolls Royce is working to ensure that the batteries will cause the Spirit of Innovation to reach speeds of 300+mph/480+kmh.

This maiden flight is happening a year after it was scheduled to take place and about six months after taxi trials. Rolls Royce is also working with airframer Tecnam and Scandinavian regional airline, Widerøe, to deliver an all-electric passenger aircraft for the commuter market, which is planned to be ready for revenue service in 2026.

The Spirit of Innovation is the result of a program called ACCEL which is short for Accelerating the Electrification of Flight, with half of the funding coming from the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI), in partnership with the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and Innovate UK.

Getting the aircraft to be light enough to support passengers on a standard commercial flight will be the next greatest challenge to solve. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce

With talks of the dangers of carbon emission and climate change, an electric-powered aircraft is a welcome development. However, getting a plane to fly on batteries is just the first step. Solving the problem of balancing the weight of the plane on batteries with that of the passengers is a greater hurdle to surmount. It will be interesting to see how Rolls Royce will achieve this.

With remarkable collaborations between successful global brands such as the Gucci-Balenciaga hack and the Marvel-Audemars Piguet partnership, it is safe to say that 2021 is the year of iconic collaborations. And now, driven by the Japanese billionaire entrepreneur, art collector, and supercar enthusiast, Yusaku Maezawa, Rolls Royce and Hermès have joined the list for the second time in their histories.

A revolutionary collaboration

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars are, for many, the pinnacle of luxury. In its “standard” version, it already outperforms practically any other refined experience. And with the introduction of its Black Badge lineup and the launch of its Cullinan SUV, the average age of its buyers went down drastically, making Rolls-Royce, surprisingly to many, a luxury car brand with high appeal to young customers.

Hermès, the French luxury house known for its signature leathers, just posted a record Q1 with 30% growth over 2019. Like Rolls-Royce, Hermès manages to successfully attract young audiences via celebrities, movie stars, and digital influencers that are eager to get their hands on a limited-edition Birkin bag (now considered the most iconic handbag of all time by many). Birkins regularly achieve price-points exceeding a hundred thousand US dollars and have been outperforming most other investments over the past two decades.

When both brands come together to create a unique piece, it will undoubtedly influence the luxury world.

The one-off Rolls Royce x Hermès Phantom Oribe

When Yusaku Maezawa steered Hermès into a collaboration with Rolls Royce, he had a simple goal in mind: create a ‘land jet’ that provides a driving experience similar to private air travel. Both luxury brands listened, and the result is one of the most elegant and understated bespoke Phantoms ever.

The car’s two-tone exterior matches the characteristic green and cream glazes of antique Japanese Oribe ware from the Maezawa’s collection. The upper part is finished in Oribe Green – a colour created exclusively for the client. Maezawa also persuaded Rolls Royce to make the colour available for his private jet that will match his bespoke auto, making the creation even more unique. The interior has been finished in Hermès Enea Green leather.

Commenting on this unique creation, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, the CEO of Rolls-Royce says, “This magnificent expression of our pinnacle product represents a landmark for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, bringing together two houses with more than three centuries’ combined experience and heritage. This majestic and tasteful Rolls-Royce Phantom demonstrates what is possible when talented people from two of the world’s great houses work closely together alongside a far-sighted, inspirational client like Maezawa-san. It is a meeting of minds, expertise, visions and skill that represents the very best of our respective craftspeople and capabilities.”

Driving Luxury through unique stories

Yusaku Maezawa is no newcomer to making headlines. In addition to having an estimated net worth of over $3 billion, he also owns some of the most exclusive cars in the world and makes global headlines that further raise his and his brand’s profiles.

Although the Phantom Oribe actually represents the second collaboration between Rolls-Royce and Hermès – back in 2008, the two houses created a one-off, steely-grey Phantom for the Four Seasons George V hotel in Paris – by agreeing to join their craftsmanship with that of Hermès and the personality of Maezawa along with his special art, Rolls Royce has succeeded in creating a truly unique story, almost guaranteeing a significant value increase of the Oribe over time and further fueling the equities of both brands.

In terms of extreme value creation, the car is a masterpiece from which other brands can learn. Limited editions have incredible potential, but most brands have yet to tap into them. Also, brands should rigorously focus on brand equity creation, which builds excitement, inspiration, and desire. And lastly, to appeal to younger audiences, brands should stay true to their values. The Rolls-Royce Oribe is the perfect example of these tenets — a true masterpiece.

You must have seen Justin Bieber’s West Coast-customised Rolls Royce Wraith by now, but, just in case this beautifully-crafted, sleek, futuristic piece of silver-grey wonder missed your attention, here is an image to drool over.

A couple of weeks back, images of Bieber’s latest automobile (because it would be a great injustice to call it anything less) flooded the internet, giving rise to online exclamations of wonder, and of course, many questions. Now, the CEO of West Coast Customs, Ryan Friedlinghaus, is taking us behind the scenes to understand the history, concept, and creation of this one-off masterpiece that may just give birth to many others of its kind from Rolls Royce.

The Bieber- bespoke Rolls Royce Wraith took 3 years to complete

The boss of West Coast Customs (best known for its role in the TV show Pimp My Ride) reveals that the car is inspired by the all-electric Rolls-Royce 103 EX concept unveiled in 2016. Actually, Bieber had wanted to purchase the car when he saw it. But, being a one-off concept car, Rolls Royce refused, and West Coast, being the bespoke auto company that it is, set out on the long, hard road to creating something close to it.

In creating the one-off, West Coast Customs shortened the Wraith by 8 inches and widened it by 12 inches. Once the design was complete, they completed a 3D scan of the Rolls-Royce and from there were able to create the bespoke body panels. It was then the job of the company’s bodywork experts to perfect the shape of the vehicle before it rolled into the paint booth and was finished in a combination of gloss silver and matte grey.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of the vehicle’s design is the wheel covers that make it look as though the car is floating. But equally impressive are the shaved doors and absence of side mirrors that increase the automobile’s sleek look by probably 110%. West Coast Customs also spent a considerable amount of time customizing the interior and installing a stereo system from JL Audio that’s far superior to the car’s standard audio setup.

West Coast Customs also created a bespoke interior for Bieber

In all, the Bieber-bespoke Rolls Royce Wraith from West Coast Customs took three years to complete, and in my very humble auto-view, it was well worth the wait. Bieber seems to agree with me because, in the video above, he broke down crying when he saw the vehicle. And honestly, who wouldn’t when given the keys to this beauty?
