Another day, another opportunity for a luxury auto brand to make a sharp detour into the evergreen world of luxury real estate. This time around, it is the Tierra Viva by Lamborghini, the automaker’s first-ever real estate project in Europe which it is developing in partnership with Dar Global.

Tierra Viva — a luxury auto-inspired real-estate concept like no other

In the last five years, luxury automakers from Bentley to Aston Martin, Porsche and even Bugatti have debuted several residential properties in America, the Middle East and Asia. All of these projects have either been high-rise buildings, as in the Bentley Residences in Miami, or, single private properties like the Aston Martin № 001 Minami Aoyama in Japan.

The Lamborghini x Dar Global Tierra Viva

Lamborghini however chose to take a different path in its latest foray into this niche: the Tierra Viva is a collection of 53 two-storey villas on a hillside, making it more like a luxury community concept than simply a large building with different luxury apartments. Each of the houses will be “carefully constructed at different levels on the hills to ensure every villa enjoys endless panoramas of the Mediterranean Sea,” explains Dar Global.

Unlike other auto-branded real estate properties featuring shared amenities like plunge pools, each of the 53 villas will come with its own rooftop swimming pool and sprawling garden. It is not immediately clear if there would be shared facilities such as a communal gym and spa, but, it may be safe to say that based on the overall concept, it would not be unlikely.

One luxury village, different living options

Each of the villas will be outfitted with attractive amenities like pools, multiple terraces and gardens. Image courtesy of Lamborghini

According to both brands, the Tierra Viva villas are divided into three distinct types: Diamante, Zafiro, and Esmeralda. The smallest is the Esmeralda which offers four bedrooms in addition to other features and amenities. Zafiro would have five bedrooms while Diamante is the largest with six bedrooms in total.

Whatever your choice, expect the best of the best of the best luxury accents and touches – Lamborghini would be in charge of the design – from marble floors to fine leather detailing and floor-to-ceiling glazing. Each of the villas will be perched atop a basement and garage so that you can have ample space to park all your autos away from the beautiful, natural views.

A new location with endless possibilities

No matter its size, each of the villas will have a unique view of the Mediterranean. Image courtesy of Lamborghini

Although this is not Lamborghini’s first residential project – it unveiled a 40-unit housing project in Dubai in 2021 – this is its first real estate project in Europe. So far, Europe has not been the most popular location for luxury brands to try out their residential projects and it remains to be seen how well Lamborghini’s first attempt will be received.

The Tierra Viva is located in the tranquil town of Behanavís near Marbella, on the south coast of Spain, and overlooks the Mediterranean. Residents of the villas will have easy access to an array of nearby attractions, including the pristine beaches, the vibrant Puerto Banús, the illustrious Marbella Club Golden Mile, and the captivating Marbella Marina.

There is no fixed date for its completion, but, if Lamborghini’s Dubai real estate project is anything to go by, we will know soon enough, by which time all the units may have been snapped up.

If there is one thing luxury auto brands have perfected over the years, it is the art of diversification. But perhaps their most natural jump has been the foray into the world of luxury yachts.

Luxury yachts are not in short supply. But when luxury automakers decided to it was time to get wet, the concept took a whole new meaning. From modelling the boats after popular marques to employing the same tech used in their cars, the yachts from these brands marry some of the best features in the automotive world with some of the most desirable characteristics in theirs.

Here are some luxury yachts by luxury auto brands that have made quite a splash in recent years

The Bugaatti Niniette 66 by Palmer Johnson

If Bugatti has ever made an ugly car, we are not aware, and so, it comes as no surprise that its yacht would be as much a delight to look at as their autos.

The Bugatti Niniette 66 beside the Bugatti Chiron

Built by Monaco-based shipyard, Palmer Johnson, the Niniette 66 is inspired by the Chiron and features the iconic ‘c shape’ line on its side. Its deck and hull are made out of carbon fibre and finished in blue and silver tones, while its interior combines carbon fibre, leather, and natural blue morta oak for a truly luxurious feel.

The lower deck houses a jacuzzi and fireplace made of fibreglass, both of which are surrounded by comfortable seats that make up the social area. There is also a champagne bar and a sun deck right in the middle.

Below deck is a generously-sized lounge and next to it is a bedroom with a double bed and bathroom.

Powered by two v8 engines, the Bugatti Niniette 66 (Niniette was the nickname for Lidia Bugatti, founder Ettore Bugatti’s daughter, while 66 stands for the length of the yacht, 66 feet, and the number of examples Johnson hopes to build for this concept) can reach top speeds of 44 knots and has a shallow draft of 0.83 metres.

Lexus Sport Yacht by the Marquis-Carver Yachts

Unlike the Bugatti Niniette 66, the Lexus Sport Yacht is a bespoke, one-off example that the auto brand has no intention of producing on a commercial scale.

It was built in collaboration with Marquis-Carver Yachts (now Marquis Yachts) using a composite of two-part polyurethane epoxy resin reinforced with a composite material called carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, or CFRP. This material allows the yacht to be at least 1000kg lighter than one built using fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP).

At the helm is a colour touchscreen that shows GPS navigation; digital charts; surface radar; underwater sonar and lighting, and contains the entertainment system, while the forward passenger cabin features a sofa that can sit a total of six people, and a table. A galley with a two-burner stove, sink, under-counter refrigerator and shower head complete the design.

The Aston Martin AM37 Powerboat by Quintessence Yachts

Do you know what Aston Martin did when it decided that it was time to move its creative capabilities from land to sea?

The AM37 is a yacht from luxury auto brand Aston Martin
The AM37 concept took two years to research and develop. Image courtesy of Aston Martin

It assembled a team of its most experienced designers, picked the brains of its master craftsmen, collaborated with naval architect Mulder Design and contracted the help of Quintessence Yachts to create a 37-foot powerboat, aptly named the AM37.

The AM37, which took two years of research and development “is a day cruiser that can be transformed into an overnight berth by transforming the table into a comfortable bed.” Perhaps its most distinct feature is its sliding deck technology, a lightweight ‘cover’ consisting of three carbon panels that can completely cover the cockpit of the boat at the touch of a button.

The AM37 comes with a sliding deck cover

With a carbon fibre dashboard that resembles that of Aston Martin’s most advanced sports cars, luxurious leather seats, mood lightening and other luxurious amenities, it is safe to say that the AM37 is a true luxury nautical vessel.

Dashboard of the AM 37

The Aston Martin Yacht comes in two versions — the AM37 with an estimated top speed of 45 knots and a choice of two 370 hp Mercury diesel or two 430 hp Mercury petrol engines, and, the AM37S version with twin 520 hp Mercury petrol engines that provide an estimated speed of 50 knots.

The Lamborghini 63 by Tecnomar

Per Lamborghini, the last thing they wanted was for their yacht to simply be a luxury supercar that could ride the waves. And while the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is anything but that, it is undeniably the boat version of the Sian FKP 37.

The yacht by luxury auto brand lamborghini has been designed to look like the Siàn FKP 37
Like the Bugatti Niniette, the Lamborghini 63 yacht has been designed to look like the Siàn FKP 37. Image courtesy of Superyacht Times

But this is not the only Lamborghini model that makes an appearance on the yacht. The two leather pilot seats are modelled after the Huracan Evo while its dashboard looks exactly like what you would find on any Lamborghini marque.

The yacht is very fast but does not give any vibrations
For a yacht of its proportion, the Lamborghini 63 is super fast and yet gives little to no vibrations. Image courtesy of Lamborghini

Powered by a pair of MAN V12 diesel engines, each packing 2,000 hp, the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 can reach top speeds of 60 knots, making her one of the fastest yachts in her class.

Looking to get one? That would set you back by at least $3.5 million.

2022 may have been a tumultuous year for global economies, but for luxury car brands, it was a different reality. The reports are in, and from Lamborghini to Rolls Royce to Bentley, last year might as well be ‘the year of the luxury car’ as almost all auto brands recorded increased sales and deliveries.

Rolls Royce

The British brand, according to an official press release, had its highest-ever annual sales in 2022. It sent out a total of 6,021 cars, the first time in its 118-year history it has exceeded 6000 deliveries in a 12-month period.

While all Rolls Royce models experienced increased demand in 2022, the Cullinan sold the most. Image courtesy of Rolls Royce Motor Cars Tampa Bay

This increase is not limited to just one model, although the Cullinan topped the list of the ‘most in-demand Rolls Royce.’ Its Bespoke commission has also received increased patronage, mostly from the Middle East.

Bentley

Bentley’s growth started in 2021 when it delivered 14,659 cars, up from 11,206 cars the previous year. And it did not stop in 2022. With a total of 15,174 deliveries, not only did it smash its 2021 records, but it also created a new a new one: it would be the first time the luxury automaker would surpass 15,000 deliveries in a single year.

Bentley was another luxury brand with high delivery rates for 2022
Bespoke programs also helped to boost luxury car sales and deliveries in 2022. Image courtesy of Bentley

Like Rolls Royce, Bentley’s success can be attributed to the Bentayga, its luxury SUV. The highly celebrated model accounted for a whopping 42% of sales, while the bespoke Mulliner programme also contributed to the high numbers.

Lamborghini

A 10% increase in deliveries meant that Lamborghini successfully got 9,233 of its cars to their owners, up from 8,405 the previous year.

The Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica
As luxury cars continue to roll out new models to meet demand, more buyers are trooping in to snap them up. Image courtesy of Lamborghini

In what is now a clear denominator across all luxury auto brands, increased demand for the Urus Super SUV is the major reason for this number.

Porsche

The German luxury brand managed to deliver a total of 309,884 vehicles in 2022 to its customers worldwide, representing a 3% increase from the previous year.

The Porsche Macan T contributed to increased sales for the brand in 2022
For Porsche, it was the same success story in 2022: more sales and deliveries. Image courtesy of Porsche

Again, the brand’s SUVs are primarily to thank for this success story: the Porsche Cayenne went out to 95,604 customers, while 86,724 buyers took delivery of their Macans in the same year.

How were luxury auto brands able to record such high sales in 2022?

According to industry experts, recessions or periods of economic volatility cause the rich to store their wealth in alternative assets like autos, jewellery and high-end timepieces to safeguard it against fluctuations. Since these assets tend to hold and even surpass their value over the years, it comes as no surprise that luxury cars enjoyed unprecedented sales in 2022.

Another reason proposed is that an increase in disposable income from the 2020 wealth surge means that the affluent have more than enough money to get themselves whatever they desire, hence the increase in the purchase of luxury items, including cars, which is considered a ‘wise’ way to dispose of extra funds.

the Lamborghini Urus Performante
By constantly evolving to meet consumers’ needs, luxury car brands have managed to remain desirable as seen in their 2022 sales stats. Image courtesy of Lamborghini

In the end, however, it appears that the answer is the principle behind every successful business: give people what they want while communicating your product’s unique and life-changing value, and they would pay you whatever you ask for. In other words, when people can connect real, tangible value to a product, they go all out to get it.

Nearly all the luxury car brands that experienced an uptick in sales/deliveries in 2022 have an SUV in their lineup. Clearly, luxury auto enthusiasts want utility vehicles that marry performance with high-end features, and these brands have successfully delivered.

2022 was clearly the year for luxury car brands and you might be wondering if their winning streak will continue into 2023. It is still too early to tell, but with the demand for luxury EVs rising, and with these auto brands rushing to deliver what is for some their first electric marques, the answer might very well be ‘yes.’

Or even more. Whether you’re looking to update your auto collection with a Urus, an Aventador, or even a Huracan, Lamborghini says that it is sold out for 2022. And 2023. And at least the first half of 2024.

“We already have 18-19 months waiting period for a new car,. We are selling more cars than we are able to produce,” Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann confirmed in a recent interview.

The Lamborghini Aventador, like ohter models, are sold out till 2024
Lamborghini is sold out till well into 2024. Image courtesy of Aventador
What Lamborghini model is responsible for these high orders?

That would be the Urus, which has sold 4,834 units this year, although the Aventador successor, a hybridized V12 engine set to debut next year, is a close contender: Lamborghini has so far received 3,000 orders for the supercar.

It is not surprising that the Urus is selling so fast. Since it was first unveiled in December 2017, it has managed to top the list of the best-selling Lamborghini marques in the shortest time ever. A few factors are responsible for this.

The Lamborghini Urus
The Urus remains Lamborghini’s best-selling model to date. Image courtesy of Lamborghini

Perhaps top of the list is the fact that it combines the powerful performance of a sportscar with the space and comfort of an SUV. With a twin-turbo engine that delivers up to 650hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, the Urus can move from 0 to 60mph in mere 3.6 seconds. It is also an all-wheel-drive, making it a comfortable enough machine if you ever find yourself driving off-road.

But the Urus is not just a high-performance SUV that you can just about drive anywhere. It is also a luxurious vehicle which is packed with all the bells and whistles that separate true luxury autos from the others. Its extremely spacious cabin is decked out with the finest materials to make your journey in it as comfortable as possible.

Getting the Lamborghini Huracan Tenicia soon would be impossible
Lamborghini appears to be recession-proof, which means that getting a new car from the brand is near-impossible. Image courtesy of Lamborghini

So yes, when you put together all of these features – luxury SUV + high-performance vehicle, on-road and off-road + high functionality + the Lamborghini name – it only makes sense that of the 7,430 units the Italian auto brand sold in the first nine months this year, the Urus takes a larger chunk.

So, what do you do if you want a Lamborghini?

Your guess is as good as ours: join the waitlist. Or, if you would rather not wait for so long, look for a credible reseller offering the exact model you desire. Taking the second option however means that you would be unable to ask the brand for custom features, so maybe waiting till 2024 might be the better alternative for you.

Breitling and Bentley’s partnership may have been the longest between an auto and a timepiece brand, but it is by no least the only creative and wildly successful one out there. Other auto brands like Lamborghini, Ferrari and Bugatti have had successful extended partnerships with other timepiece brands, and every day, new partnerships are born.

If you’re crazy about autos or are thinking of getting the perfect gift for an auto enthusiast (that is not an automobile of course), here are 7 timepieces made in collaboration with auto brands to consider.

Jacob & Co x Bugatti

You can always trust Jacob & Co to make the most complex and extravagant timepieces, and, with this piece for Bugatti, it did not fail to deliver.

Bugatti Chiron Blue Sapphire Crystal Tourbillon is an auto-inspired watch

Actually, the partnership between both brands officially began in 2019 with the Epic X and Twin Turbo Furious Bugatti kicking off the action. The latest is the Bugatti Chiron Blue Sapphire Crystal Tourbillon timepiece that boasts a racing-inspired blue sapphire case and a 578-part manual wind movement whose engine replicates the Bugatti W16 engine.

Just like a vehicle, its movement is suspended in the case with shock absorbers, and on-demand 16 pistons power up and down on the crankshaft like the hyper car’s engine. If the Bugatti Chiron Blue Sapphire Crystal Tourbillon timepiece is your choice, it will set you back a cool $1.5 million.

Roger Dubuis x Lamborghini

In the last 5 years, Roger Dubuis has worked closely with Lamborghini to create timepieces whose designs and colours, high-tech materials and visionary aesthetics mime the brand’s best cars.

Excalibur Spider Countach is an auto-inspired watch

The newest creation is this Excalibur Spider Countach developed for the launch of the new Countach supercar. Made from Roger Dubuis’ “exclusive high-technology Mineral Composite Fibre (MCF) material”, the timepiece boasts a complex 295-part hand-finished and assembled movement that was developed entirely in-house with double flying tourbillons at a 90-degree angle.

The Excalibur Spider Countach is a boutique exclusive priced at $815,000. With only 8pieces scheduled to be produced, it may be hard to get your hands on this one.

Bovet 1822 x Pininfarina

Like the others, both brands have been in partnership for some years now. The latest fruit of this union is the Battista Tourbillon which honours the Pininfarina Battista Hyper GT electric auto.

The Battista Tourbillon timepiece features an all-new movement with a two-sided 60-second Flying Tourbillon and a patented spherical rewinding system. The tourbillon cage is reminiscent of the Battista Impulso wheels, and, emulating the Battista E-Heart charging logo, the piece features an E-Heart-shaped aperture to showcase the date on the front and the winding mechanism on the back.

Thankfully, this is not a limited-edition piece and you can get it for $330,000.

Porsche Design x Porsche

The most unsurprising collaboration, timepieces by Porsche Design are perhaps the only ones not inspired by a specific marque.

Take for example the Chronograph 1-911 Edition timepiece. It was made to celebrate 50 years of Porsche Design and honours the first chronograph made by the brand. The motorsport-inspired timepiece comes with chronograph functions, day and date indication, and a tachymeter chapter ring for measuring speed.

The Chronograph 1-911 Edition is the real auto-themed watch
Inage courtesy of Porsche Design

Perhaps the only direct relationship it has with a specific auto model is the fact that it is only available to owners of the 750 Porsche 911 Targa GTS Porsche Design 50th Anniversary Edition sports auto. Both are sold together and cost $195,850 (excluding delivery, processing, and handling fees).

Not exactly what you may be looking for, since it’s a 2-in-1 deal. But it is definitely worth considering

Richard Mille x Mclaren

Already five years into its partnership with McLaren Automotive, Richard Mille continues to push horological limits. The RM 40-01 Automatic Tourbillon McLaren Speedtail is a grand example of the futuristic styling and performance of both brands.

RM 40-01 Automatic Tourbillon McLaren Speedtail

Honouring the fastest exotic car built to date by McLaren, the RM 40-01 boasts a new 69-part titanium and Carbon TPT® case that took 18 months to make. The all-new engine inside consists of a whopping 672 parts and was more than 8,000 hours in the R&D phases.

Priced at $1,023,000, only 106 pieces will be made to match the number of McLaren Speedtail autos that will be manufactured.

Girard-Perregaux x Aston Martin

One year and 3 timepieces after, Girard-Perregaux and Aston Martin want to paint your wrist green with the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Chronograph Aston Martin F1 Edition.

This model is limited to 306 pieces in reference to the total distance in kilometres of the 2022 British Grand Prix at Silverstone and its case is made from a blend of titanium powder and pieces of carbon fibre, materials gotten from two Formula One autos from the 2021 season. The straps also feature these materials alongside synthetic rubber and have been rendered in the same Aston Martin Racing Green.

The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Chronograph Aston Martin F1 Edition was made from actual cars

What makes this ‘auto timepiece’ even more unique is that, for the first time, a Laureato Absolute Chronograph has on its rear a sapphire crystal that allows for viewing the hand-finished movement. It is priced at $27,800.

Ducati x Bulgari

Ok, so this may not be an auto brand, but since motorbikes are categorised as vehicles, well…

The newest collaborators on this list, Ducati and Bulgari’s first baby is the Bulgari Aluminum Ducati Special Edition Chronograph. The 40mm timepiece is fitted with Bulgari’s B130 automatic-winding mechanical movement that holds an impressive 42-hour power reserve. The deep-red dial is the signature colour of both brands, while the black-covered back case highlights the new partnership between Bulgari and Ducati with commemorative engravings of each brand’s logo.

Priced at $5000, the Bulgari Aluminum Ducati Special Edition Chronograph is limited to only 1000 pieces. So, if this appeals to you, you would have to make a move fast before it sells out.

Lamborghini has iconic and highly desirable supercars under its belt. From the Raging Bull badge with a prestige value that surpasses just about every other automotive marque to the iconic Miura and Countach, as well as the super-fast and aggressively styled Aventador, the auto brand is a well-regarded name in the world of autos. But with the Lamborghini 63 yacht, it is looking to make a new name for itself.

The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63.

The company has long produced big-block marine engines for offshore powerboat racing. In 2020 however, it announced a collaboration with Tecnomar, part of The Italian Sea Group, to transpose the Lamborghini spirit into a ferociously styled, high-speed motor yacht. Today, the first Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 (the 63 references the yacht’s length in feet and Lamborghini’s 1963 foundation) is in the water.

“What we didn’t want was to simply have a car on the water,” said Mitja Borkert, director of Lamborghini’s Centro Stile. “It would have been very naive to just take the car shape and put it on top of a hull. It had to be supremely clean and classy.”

”One of the biggest challenges was maintaining a very low profile like the cars because on a yacht you need a certain amount of headroom for comfort,” adds Gian Marco Campanino, art director at The Italian Sea Group. “It was a balance between making everything as light and sleek as possible, but also robust and vibration-free.”

The yacht has been designed to look like the Siàn FKP 37

A trademark Lamborghini motif is the distinctive hexagonal shape of its supercars when viewed from the front or rear. This has been subtly reproduced in the angled hull windows and open transom of the yacht.

Other features on the 63 reference specific Lamborghini models: The two leather pilot seats are adapted versions of those in the Huracan Evo with Sparco racing seatbelts. The helm is based on the steering wheel of the Aventador (minus the paddle shifts and airbag), and the Verde gea paint job is the same as the new limited-series Siàn FKP 37, powered by hybrid technology. Even the dashboard graphics and aviation-style cover on the start/stop buttons are the same as the cars.

While the hull is made of fibreglass for strength, the carbon-fibre superstructure is designed to keep the weight down and the centre of gravity low. Under the aft sun pad are a pair of gleaming MAN V12 diesel engines, 2,000 hp each.

When combined with a slippery hull form and surface drives, they provide a top speed in excess of 60 knots, making this 63-footer one of the fastest yachts in her class. At a cruising speed of 40 to 45 knots, she burns around 100 gallons of fuel per hour for a range of 360 nautical miles.

High speed usually means a bumpy ride, yet despite a stiff breeze that was kicking up three-foot waves during a test run, the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 ran close to her redline speed, with no slamming and minimal vibration. She also proved a very dry boat: at the end of the trial, there was hardly a drop of seawater on the windshield.

The 63 was designed to be a fast day boat or weekend cruiser. Behind the helm are a dinette and galley station, pop-up television and rear sun pad. Belowdecks is a forward master suite and guest cabin with twin single berths, both with sporty, carbon-looking trim and grey-and-yellow leather upholstery that carries Lamborghini’s automotive style to the water.

With a base price of about $3.5 million, the performance yacht is aimed at Lamborghini’s existing client base. The Italian Sea Group was reluctant to say exactly how many units have been sold to date. It did confirm, however, that available build slots through 2022 have already been reserved.

What are some of the world’s most exclusive vintage cars? A new double-volume anthology, Ultimate Collector Cars, featuring 100 of the best collector cars in history, answers this question for you.

Its authors, in a recent interview, picked out seven that topped the list. The cars were chosen for their rarity and exclusivity – the majority were either used as racing cars or “homologated” from racing cars – meaning they were produced as part of the regulation process for motorsport sanctioning bodies. In both cases, only a limited number would have been produced.

Ultimate collector cars by Charlotte and Peter Fiell

“These weren’t people cars; these were cars at the absolute cutting edge of technical possibilities,” said co-author Charlotte Fiell. “Every single car in the book was pioneering in its day.”

However, the authors point out that the locations of many historic cars are unknown, because sales are often kept behind closed doors, and many private collectors keep the contents of their collections a secret.

“We hope to shed new light onto this whole world of car collecting,” explains second co-author Peter Fiell. “We really wanted to share the beauty and stories of these wonderful vehicles with a wider audience,” added Charlotte Fiell.

Read on for Charlotte and Peter Fiell’s pick of the seven ultimate collector cars:

Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B MM Spider, 1938

For Italian automotive company Alfa Romeo, 1938 was a key season because it marked the company’s return to motor racing, after several years of disbandment, and the launch of the Alfa Corse team. It was also the last year when Ferrari headed the in-house works team.

The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B MM Spider was the racing car designed for this season, with five produced for the Mille Miglia event.

“It is generally considered the most collectible pre-war sports racing car of all time,” said Peter.

This particular example is the car that was driven by race winner, Clemente Biondetti. It is owned by the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia.

Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupé”, 1955

The fastest road car of its day, the Uhlenhaut Coupé was designed by Rudolf Uhlenhaut as a coupé version of the 300 SLR race car, which Stirling Moss drove to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia.

The car was developed for the track but never competed because – following the Le Mans disaster that year, which involved the 300 SLR race car – Mercedes Benz withdrew from racing for the rest of that season. As a result, only two examples of the coupé were ever produced.

Both owned by the Mercedes-Benz Museum, these collector cars are distinctive for their ‘gullwing’ doors, which open upward and outward.

“This is arguably the most valuable car in the world, and it’s certainly the most valuable car in the book,” said Peter.

Ferrari 290 MM, 1956

“This is not only one of the most gorgeous Ferraris is of all time, it’s also one of the rarest,” said Peter, describing the 290 MM.

Only four of these cars were ever built. This particular example is the one that Argentinian driver, Juan Manuel Fangio, raced in the 1956 Mille Miglia, where the Scuderia Ferrari racing team enjoyed a 1-2-3-4 finish. However, this car placed fourth, when it was expected to win.

“Fangio, who may be considered the greatest racing driver that ever lived, didn’t fulfil his promise and probably felt he was letting Enzo Ferrari down,” said Peter.

Luckily for Fangio, he and the 290 MM went on to win the World Sportscar Championship later that year.

Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, 1957

With its low-slung aerodynamic form, the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa was a controversial car. However, this lightweight body was key to the car’s competitiveness – not only did it reduce drag, but it also directed air to vents that cooled the brakes.

It retained the excellent handling and reliability of the very first Testa Rossa, built the year before, but was equipped with a more powerful V12 engine.

There were 34 of these cars produced. This particular example was the winner of the 1,000 Kilometres of Buenos Aires event in 1958, but is also distinctive for another reason.

“It’s a competition-winning Testa Rossa, but also it’s the only black one,” revealed Peter. “All the Ferraris are red, so it was particularly desirable to get this car in the book because it’s unusual in its colour.”

Shelby 427 Cobra S/C, 1966

Carroll Shelby had originally planned to race his 427 Cobra in the 1965 season, but as production was slow, he failed to meet the homologation rules that required 100 cars to be built.

Production was halted as a result, and 29 of the unused competition chassis were repurposed to create the 427 Cobra S/C (semi-competition). These street racers retained many of the race car features, including the riveted hood scoop, oil cooler, roll bar and side exhausts.

“If I could have any car in the book, I think it would be this one,” said Peter.

“It’s one of the most powerful, dangerous, visceral, road cars you can ever imagine. If you heard this thing, you wouldn’t believe it. It’s a beast.”

This example is one of the few that still remain in good condition; according to the authors, most have been “hammered into the ground” by their owners.

Lamborghini Miura P400 SVJ, 1971

The Miura P400 made headlines when it was first launched in 1965, as a result of its transversely mid-mounted 60° V12 engine, which was a huge innovation at that time. It later was given a curvaceous body, designed by Carrozzeria Bertone.

“There are a lot of people that think the Lamborghini Miura is the most beautiful supercar ever designed,” said Peter.

The model proved so successful that engineer Bob Wallace was able to convince company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini – who was famously reluctant to produce race cars – to develop a competition version of the car, the SV.

Although the car never made it to the track, it attracted the attention of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran and an avid car collector. Lamborghini built Pahlavi a modified version, known as the SVJ, which provided better performance and had a racier appearance. Another three were also produced, but this one remains the most collectible.

“You can say without a shadow of a doubt that this is the ultimate Miura,” said Peter.

McLaren F1 LM, 1995
One of the best collector cars is the Mclaren F1

A true supercar, the McLaren F1 sports car combines high-tech materials like carbon fibre and titanium with a central driving position ahead of the engine and fuel tank and distinctive butterfly doors.

The McLaren F1 is still considered today to be one of the most important automotive designs in history, because of what it represented, said Peter. It set all sorts of precedents in terms of its design and engineering.

After a race version of the F1 took four of the top five places at Le Mans in 1995, McLaren developed the LM variant, a road car that more closely resembled the track car than the original F1, thanks to race engines and weight-reduced interiors.

Only five of these F1 LMs were created, along with a single prototype known as the XP1 LM, which is the example featured here. It features a “papaya orange” finish, in tribute to Bruce McLaren’s original racing colours.
