Congratulations on hitting the big 40! You are almost certain you know all the things you love and hate, and while you may still be unsure of what the future holds, you’re a bit more confident about who you are and where you’re going.

Oh! and you may also begin to notice the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines (even when your face is ‘resting’); under-eye bags hours after you’ve woken up; your skin might appear duller and your pores larger.

A woman applies a skincare product to her face while looking at the mirror
From age 40, you would begin to notice visible changes in your skin and in the way your face looks. Image courtesy of Sora Shimazaki via Pexels

This comes as no surprise: skin cell turnover slows down somewhere in the 30s, collagen production decreases, and antioxidant defences decline. By the time you hit 40, the process is much slower and the decline faster. But it’s not all gloom and doom. While the general rule is to have an anti-aging beauty routine on lockdown in your 30s, it is never too late to start when you turn 40.

Wondering what skincare products will work at reducing wrinkles and keeping the fine lines at bay for people in their 40s? Here are some of the best to start with

Yves Rocher Overconcentrated Lift Serum

The overconcentrated botanical compound here comes from Ajupa Reptans (also known as Carpet Bugle) which, among other things, is known to help with speeding up the process of healing, promoting cell growth and reducing inflammation.

According to Yves Rocher, following a clinical study involving 25 cases, 92% said they noticed wrinkles looked reduced almost immediately. After one month, the skin appeared to sag less and looked stronger.

The Overconcentrated Lift serum can be used in the morning and evening on both the face and neck to reduce wrinkles and tighten the skin.

Troiareuke Energy Cream

Because cellular turnover slows down as we age, our skin tends to retain dead cells longer than it can replace them with younger, healthier-looking ones. Don’t forget also that collagen production is rapidly declining, which means that not only do you have a higher percentage of dead skin cells all over, you now have to contend with skin that is less elastic and less hydrated.

The key ingredients of camellia seed oil, galactomyces ferment filtrate, ginseng root extract, as well as 7 different types of peptides make the Troiareuke Energy Cream a great ally in the fight against ageing skin.

Camellia seed oil is an antioxidant that protects and moisturises the skin, while peptides, which contain amino acids that can be easily absorbed by the skin, can help to stimulate your skin to produce collagen.

Troiareuke Rejuvenating Formula Ampule

Formulated with Hydrolyzed Collagen and Acetylhexapeptide-8, Troiareuke Rejuvenating Formula Ampule works well in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

And with the addition of licorice root extract which helps to fade dark spots, this serum will not only help you look younger in a non-invasive way, it will also help your skin appear brighter and well hydrated.

Murad Resurgence Complete Skincare Regimen

The Murad Resurgence Complete Skincare Regimen is perfect for people just starting out in their anti-ageing beauty routine. It contains a renewing eye cream, a sun cream (age-Balancing Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 30), a hydrating toner, a cleansing cream, a rapid collagen infusion serum and a moisturising cream.

Use the Renewing Cleansing Cream, Hydrating Toner, the Intensive Age Diffusing Serum and the Age Balancing Moisture SPF 30 in the morning, and the Renewing Cleansing Cream, Hydrating Toner, the Intensive Age Diffusing Serum, the Age Balancing Night Cream and the Renewing Eye Cream in the evening for improved firmness and the reduction of wrinkles and fine lines.

Any beauty regiment would be moot without sunscreen, so whether you’re going with a serum or a cream, make sure to finish up with an SPF 30 at the very least.

The above-mentioned products are available at Montaigne stores nationwide.

Have you flown with Singapore Airlines recently? You may have noticed — if you were in business class – that there was a little something waiting for you if you want it.

The ‘little something’ is none other than SIA’s first-ever amenity kit for individual passengers in its business cabin. Made in collaboration with British perfumer Penhaligon’s, the kit is a skincare and wellness affair consisting of a hand lotion, a facial mist, a balm and while stocks last, a 5ml roll-on perfume oil Luna, all infused with Quercus, a refreshing and citrus and basil scent.

After years of offering passengers in its business class cabin in-flight care products in a shared lavatory, Singapore Airlines now has a unique amenities kit for everyone if they want it. Image courtesy of MileLion

Yet, Singapore Airlines is hardly the only carrier offering amenity kits filled with skincare and wellness products to premium passengers, nor does it have the most extravagant offering.

Awards in this category will perhaps go to Taiwan’s Eva Air who in the past used to offer Rimowa-branded amenity kits but now gives its premium cabin guests Salvatore Ferragamo amenity kits when the former was discontinued, and Emirates Airlines whose partnerships with Byredo and Bulgari since 2018 has seen them produce some of the most luxurious kits above ground level, including a pair of pyjamas designed to hydrate the skin.

But amenity kits are not the only options airlines offer their premium passengers in their quest to ensure that their journey across the sky is as comfortable as possible. Emirates, for example, has a ‘shower spa’ for its first-class passengers travelling aboard their A380 Airbus.

As it is above, so it is below

The skincare and wellness trend is not just restricted to the skies. Last year, British Airways launched the Forty Winks Lounge with sleep pods designed to help premium passengers nap properly ahead of their flight.

Air France’s business lounge in the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris features a wellness area, a rest area with lounge chairs, a detox bar, and saunas with facial treatments from Clarins Spa. Just last month, the airline opened a new airport spa with luxury French beauty brand Sisley. The spa, called La Première Sisley Beauty Institute, offers skin rehydration treatments for men and women.

At the Madrid airport, the SHA Wellness Clinic has erected an outpost where travellers seeking better options can go for spa treatments, healthy foods, and drinks.

With an ongoing global health challenge courtesy of the Coronavirus, and with the Ukraine-Russia situation, international travel has become rather daunting. If you’re going to be moving in between countries and regions, it only makes sense to seek out airlines that will offer you the best services all around, including in the skincare and wellness categories.

Skincare once again topped the beauty chart in 2020 when a good number of us, after countless zoom and other online meetings, suddenly realised that our skin (read: face) was not as great as we thought it was pre-lockdown when it was commonplace to slap on make-up for every interaction and activity outside our homes.

Sadly, after yet another round of vitamin C serum, retinol face cream, ‘potent’ mix of niacinamide, lactic acid and AHAs, some of us came to the conclusion that we were clearly doing it all wrong as there was no visible improvement. And, in search of answers, we may have thought to buy another ‘power’ product that everyone swears sent their acne away for good and cleared up every patch and dark spot before these had the chance to show up.

Serum in a bottle against a pink background
There are countless beauty serums in the market today, but not all of them will give you the results you seek. Image courtesy of Nykaa

Stop, says Lilian Arigbodi, the founder of Skinologist Spa and Skincare which is a beauty and a skincare brand in Lekki phase one, Lagos, Nigeria. “I think that [people] … feel that they can prescribe for themselves. Especially if you have a skincare problem, you should go to the professionals so that you don’t waste your money buying guesswork. Actually, go and let them check your skin and know what the problem is and have them advise you.”

However, consulting with a dermatologist and other skincare experts does not come cheap, and for some, this may be a huge turn off seeing as there are thousands of products that can be purchased over-the-counter (OTC) containing the same ingredients as the ones offered by specialists, and promising the same results.

Lilian Arigbodi, founder and CEO of Skinologist Skincare and Spa
Lilian Arigbodi, founder and CEO of Skinologist Spa and Skincare

Arigbodi argues that there is a world of difference between OTC products and dermatologist-produced or recommended products. “Treatment-based products [from an expert] can never be cheap. [It may look] to you like [like] a normal skincare product but no, it has [been formulated to ensure that] it goes deep down to the root of [your skincare] problem and starts the treatment from there.”

A good example is retinol. There are literally hundreds of thousands of articles floating on the web at this moment with a breakdown of why you should use it and the best brands on the market today. However, like many other people, if you have tried some of these products, you may have probably seen your face break out more or worse, become extremely sensitive.

OTC beauty products are great, but a dermatologist-advised one is better. Image courtesy of Byrdie

Lilian explains that this can happen because of the base ingredient of the product, which is the one that “helps the active ingredient”; retinol in this case. Since you may not be able to determine what the base ingredients are and how they might affect your type of skin – which is something a dermatologist will be able to decipher and tell you – you may end up doing more damage than good.

And what about the popular shea butter and black soap combos that most beauty brands this side of the world tout as the holy grail for clear skin? Should you include that too in your regimen?

“African beauty is so much more than shea butter or black soap. And I think so many people think they must try to push [them] says Ore Runsewe of Arami Essentials at the just concluded Beauty West Africa Exhibition. Faith of Lindors Beauty agrees with this statement, but she still thinks that they are a must-have in your skincare routine.

Shea butter is the major offering of most African skincare brands
Most African beauty brands appear to restrict themselves to shea butter, black soaps, and more recently, oils, limiting consumers’ choices. Image courtesy of Loved by Curls

“Most of these [beauty and skincare] products you see have vitamin E which helps to reduce the effects of sun damage on the skin. Shea butter has the same function, and since it is readily available [on the continent], it only makes sense that we use it more. Same thing with black soap.”

As you start – or continue on – your journey towards beautiful and healthy skin, make sure to read between the fine lines of each product first before making a decision. Also ensure that your skincare routine includes a cleanser, serum, moisturiser, and sunscreen advises Arigbodi. And lastly, don’t forget to speak to an expert first before you splurge.

In the last three years – that is, if we’re ignoring the year of the Coronavirus 2020 – BtoB Events Ltd has held what can arguably be described as one of Africa’s biggest beauty exhibitions. Dubbed the Beauty West Africa Exhibition, this year’s edition took place from November 17-19 at the Landmark Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.

I did not know it at the time, but I ticked all the boxes of one of the groups the exhibition targeted. Not one to be obsessed with the latest beauty trends, I, like any other person, want to look as good as I can at every point in time. Unfortunately, hormonal acne (the worst!), hyperpigmentation, and scars from the stubborn acne that will not go away without a fight keep getting in the way, and, as I prepared to attend the event, I discovered that the Benzoyl Peroxide ointment that was meant to deal with my acne had worked overtime and burnt the left half of my face.

Speakers on day two of the 2021 Beauty West Africa exhibition
Speakers at the first panel discussion on day two. L-R: Nnenna Okoye, Elizabeth Enajeroh, Ebere Nwachukwu, Hilary Taiwo and Ifeoluwa Bakare.

The horrific burn was as symbolic as it was embarrassing. It was the physical representation of my struggles in the last year with finding the right products to use for my kind of skin and its challenges. As I walked around interacting with exhibitors, I quickly realised two facts: first, I was not alone. And secondly, people like me were part of the reasons why the Beauty West Africa Exhibition was created – to link stakeholders and businesses in the African beauty industry to the people who need their solutions the most.

While exhibitors came from all over the continent to showcase products and services that largely fell into the cosmetics, haircare and aesthetic beauty range, it was the skincare/wellness niche that had the most representation, a situation that is in line with trends that dominated 2020 and have spilt over into this year.

Girls in pink dresses modelling different lush hair extensions
Exhibitors, like Lush Hair which was also a major sponsor, came from all over the continent.

We still love our makeup and want our hair extensions, but there is a growing need to take good care of the skin and scalp underneath these additions. In the past, we would have turned to well-known international brands for help, but now, after borders were shut, we were left with no choice but to search closer to home for solutions that work.

The conference on the other hand covered a wider range of subjects. From Beauty Franchise and Distribution: International Brands available in Nigeria to Beauty Brands and Influencer Marketing; Beauty Retail Channels in Nigeria; The Rise of A beauty: Owning the Narrative and, Seeking Professional Advice: Meet the Experts, the topics focused more on the business of beauty. Experts like Mrs Kudi Fashola of Kuddy Cosmetics, Ore Runsewe of Arami Essentials, Vienne Odofin of Distrimag Global and Psalmuel Josephs of the Aesthetic Clinic did an excellent job informing and enlightening. For quite a number of visitors, however, the knowledge they sought was at the booths. And they were not disappointed.

Panelists at the 2021 Beauty West Africa Exhibition and Conference
Speakers on the second panel, day two. L-R: Akousa Acheaw, Lade Salami, Morenike Onajide, Ore Runsewe, Majiri Igboegwu and Jennifer Uloko.

Like me. I had set out simply to attend the exhibition and conference, but after in-depth discussions with the CEOs of Timoje by Risi and Skinology at their booths – both of whom were drawn to me by the huge black mark on the left side of my face – I went back home with whipped shea butter from the former and papaya toner from the latter. I replaced my regular moisturiser and toner with both products, and by the next morning, my face was about 95 per cent free of the burn. Don’t just ask me for proof: I completely forgot to take before and after pictures in my excitement.

I had asked Ms Risi why she thought using locally-made products or products created by Africans for Africans was important and why she believed it was more effective than using those created in other continents for a mass market. She explained that the former has been tailored specifically to address the concerns the African skin is likely to face in and out of its natural environment, unlike formulations from other parts of the world that may or may not work for a skin exposed to our kind of weather.

Mrs Lilian Arigbodi of Skinology agrees. Over-the-counter (OTC) products are good, she told me, but if you want better results as an African for your skin, it is best to work with experts with a knowledge of your skin type who can correctly prescribe products tailored to address your peculiarities.

The 2021 Beauty West Africa Exhibition and Conference has ended, but it was definitely a rewarding experience for everyone who attended, especially if like me, they went home with solutions that revamped their beauty regimen, or like Timoje by Risi, they were nearly sold out on day one.

From retinol serums to hyaluronic acids, sheets, masks and creams, there is no end to the beauty products that companies and customers alike say is the ultimate solution to your skincare problems. Yet, you may have noticed that in spite of the numerous bottles and tubes stacked in your bathroom cabinet, your face manages to break out every month, leaving you with scars or black spots that do not go away easily.

Those monthly skincare fluctuations aren’t a coincidence: alongside erratic mood swings, uncontrollable chocolate cravings, and crippling cramps, skincare changes are just another sign of your hormones’ natural cycle.

Do you notice changes to your skin every month? Your period may be the culprit. Image courtesy of Sora Shimazaki from Pexels

But it is good news! This recurring cycle makes your skin, perhaps for the first time, predictable. That predictability is a good thing because it means you can now optimize your skincare regime to work with your body’s natural changes.

This is known as period skincare or cycle syncing, and the first step to controlling hormonal acne is to track your monthly cycle. You can do this manually, but a period tracking app is usually best. The idea is that your skin undergoes a series of changes as your hormones ebb and flow throughout your approximately 28-day cycle, and therefore your skincare routine should change to accommodate this connection between your skin and hormones.

Of course, if this does not apply to you or you have an overarching problem (for example, dry skin or acne caused by such conditions as PCOS) on a regular basis, it’s best to have a consistent skincare routine to deliver more effective results.

The menstrual cycle starts with the first day of the period and ends when the next period begins. To help you anticipate the skincare changes happening in your body—and tailor your routine to match your unique cycle, read on for a breakdown of every hormonal pattern

Menstruation

This stage is when you experience your period, and here, you may notice that your skin is dry, dull and tired, which is caused by low estrogen and progesterone levels. Elevated prostaglandins hormone levels might mean that your skin is more sensitive.

Start cycle syncing your beauty regimen if you notice a change in your skin during or after your period
Use a thicker cream or oil during your period to combat dull skin. Image courtesy of FabWoman

Try incorporating thicker face oils and creams to your routine, in addition to indulging your skin in hydrating overnight and sheet masks. Also, avoid harsh exfoliating products and anything that will make your skin dry.

Follicular phase (Post-mensturation)

Directly after your period, your skin is in a great place. Estrogen levels start to rise, which results in a natural glow. Mindy Pelz, author of The Menopause Reset, adds that when estrogen is high, collagen production will also be high, giving the skin a plump, springy appearance.

Translation: Now is the time to try out any new products (if you want) since your skin is at its best. It’s also about maintenance, so try using a vitamin c serum in addition to water-based serums like hyaluronic acid to prolong your skin’s glow.

Ovulation

Marked as the mid-cycle point (about 13-15 days before the start of the next period), this is when your egg is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube. In addition to estrogen, testosterone levels are at their peak (this spike is what causes ovulation), and when these levels are high enough, they signal a dramatic increase in the luteinizing hormone. This is also the stage before hormonal acne comes knocking.

Incorporate dermaplaning in your period skincare if necessary
You may want to consider dermaplaning in your cycle syncing routine if you notice an increase in facial hair during ovulation. Image courtesy of Versed Skincare

Use a lightweight lotion to keep skin hydrated. To prepare for oil production ahead, deep-clean pores with a detoxifying mask and exfoliate with lactic acid to keep pores free from buildup. An increase in testosterone levels can contribute to facial hair production, so this might be when dermaplaning can come in handy.

Luteal phase (pre-menstruation)

After making a glorious, albeit brief, appearance, it’s time to say goodbye to your estrogen and welcome progesterone which can cause the skin to swell and lead to inflammatory acne papules and pustules. An imbalance of testosterone will also increase oil production, which may result in clogged pores and more breakouts.

Your cycle syncing battle plan should be to eliminate excess oil without triggering your inflamed skin. All your products should be non-comedogenic and ideally contain anti-inflammatory properties. First, cleanse frequently with a gentle foaming cleanser. Instead of turning to harsh chemicals, try niacinamide to balance oil production and reduce inflammation, along with a spot treatment on breakout-prone areas. You can also decide to increase exfoliation to two to three times a week and incorporate a purifying mask to counter congested skin.

Finally, if you find that your hormonal acne is cystic and especially painful, consult a board-certified dermatologist who can offer alternative options to make your routine more effective.

In 2020, Hermès Beauty launched a lipstick collection and went on to drop a blush collection early this year. Now, it is expanding its beauty range with the unveiling of Les Mains Hermès – a new collection of hand care objects that include colourful enamels in a variety of shades; a base coat; a top coat; reparative hand cream; nourishing cuticle oil, and hands down the chicest nail files ever made.

The brand’s artistic director, Pierre-Alexis Dumas, explains that focusing on the hands next was a natural progression for Hermès Beauty. “The hand is the epitome of care. It is our partner, our eye, our identity. It has no gender, it signals behaviours, it is the hand of the rider or the artisan. It is both powerful and delicate.”

The collection’s hand cream is composed of 98 per cent natural ingredients, including soothing white mulberry extract, protective hyaluronic acid, and reparative natural moss. Its silk-like texture leaves behind no greasy residue and, for an added element of elegance, its scent has been designed by in-house perfumer, Christine Nagel.

The next step in the Les Mains Hermès ritual is the nourishing nail and cuticle oil, formulated with 100 per cent natural ingredients. Then, a strengthening enamel base coat prepares the nails for the most exciting element of the new collection – the nail enamel colours.

The nail enamel collection features 24 shades, after Hermès’ historic home address at 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré, with colours derived from the brand’s famed enamel bracelets. The shades range from a subtle powdery pink of Rose Porcelaine to the rich chocolate brown of Brun Bistre, and from classic red Rouge H to the eccentric sun-yellow of Jaune Impérial.

Darker shades include the verdant Vert Égyptien, inspired by mirages in the Nile Valley, the cloudy-grey Gris Étoupe, or the autumn leaf-coloured Orange Brûlé.

The packaging of the nail products are reminiscent of that of the house’s earlier beauty products: The bottom of the caps of the bottles, for instance, features the brushed gold finish also found on Hermes lipstick tubes and blush pots. It has been designed by the brand’s creative director of shoes and jewellery, Pierre Hardy.

“While make-up can be fun, whimsical or dramatic, Hermès [hand] care is designed like an intimate and pure essential object. We move from centre stage to the wings, with objects that are not on display, but that are kept literally to hand,” says Hardy of the collection.

Les Mains Hermes will be available from Oct 15. Prices range from $58 for a set of 12 nail files to $185 for a Complete Hand Care cream. Each bottle of nail enamel retails for $74.

When the Coronavirus hit the cosmetics industry, it did not only affect sales; it shook its very foundations. Before the world of makeup had to grapple with a virus that forced everybody indoors, effectively putting a temporary stop to any reason to dress up and make up, reports were revealing a rapidly building problem – cosmetics sales were either stagnating or declining. Taking over was skincare, with K-beauty brands slowly and steadily giving larger brands a run for their money.

Enter a global virus to shake things up, and makeup sales begin to experience a faster decline. A report by Mckinsey predicts that there will be a 55 and 75 per cent decline in cosmetic and fragrance purchase respectively, especially for prestige brands. This is partly due to the lockdown, but also because we still have to wear a mask when we step out, or at least until a vaccine becomes readily available globally.

For skincare brands, the story has been different. The same report explains that, all over the world, these brands experienced an uptick in sales. The boom has clearly not declined, with everyone beginning to launch skincare products from JLo beauty to Pharell’s Humanrace and Alicia Key’s Keys Soulcare. Now, skincare brands are entering into the cosmetics-sphere, launching hugely successful skincare-makeup hybrids.

This week, K-beauty brand, Glow Recipe, launched its second skincare-makeup hybrid product. The Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops is a liquid highlighter with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide that can work three ways: as a primer, as a serum and as a highlighter. The reviews are out already, and so far, it has been nothing but praise.

And Glow Recipe is confident that its new product will be successful. In January, it released its tinted lip balm that co-founder and co-CEO Sarah Lee said was its most successful product launch of the year. The product ranked in the top-three skin-care SKUs at Sephora and Cult Beauty, with the brand selling one tube every 30 seconds in North America within the first few weeks of launch and selling out at several Sephora physical locations, Lee said.

But it is not the only skincare brand dipping its feet into the colourful waters of cosmetics. The Ordinary has a foundation, and way before 2020, sunscreen brand Supergoop launched an SPF eyeshadow. Skincare brand Tatcha is also offering its Kyoto Red Silk Lipstick and a primer in addition to its other cosmetics-skin-care hybrids including tinted lip balm and a tinted eye treatment.

For now, it seems like the major proponents of skincare-makeup hybrids are the skincare brands. However, if the sale of cosmetics continues to decline and skincare products that double as makeup continue to rise, it is only a matter of time before the cosmetics industry makes the necessary pivot.

For La Prairie, skincare has always been an exercise in reconfiguring time. Since it started producing skincare in 1978, the storied Swiss brand has sought to distil rejuvenation into a tangible product, making it possible to recreate the natural markers of vitality – smoothness, firmness and radiance – on the surface of the skin. It’s a feat that practically defies the natural ageing process, which is why, for its Platinum Rare collection, the brand has looked as far as the cosmos for the secret to youthful skin.

“Platinum carries its own dimension of time and when platinum hurtled to Earth in a meteor shower aeons ago, it carried this unique dimension of time that we have called the platinum moment. The scientists at La Prairie were intrigued by the possibilities to disrupt the rules of time and they’ve reinterpreted the platinum moment as a moment when beauty lasts for eternity,” explains Belinda Besant, La Prairie’s Education Director on the inspiration behind its Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation Collection. For La Prairie, platinum is a symbol of a different dimension of time or, in their words, ‘a place where time is suspended.’

This month, La Prairie has launched a reformulated version of its signature Platinum Rare range, the most high-end of its skincare offerings. The entire collection consists of six products – the new Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation Cream and Eye Cream, a velvety-soft Elixir and Eye Elixir serum, as well as Night Elixir and Platinum Rare Cellular Life-Lotion.

The unparalleled ability of the Platinum Range to completely transform skin is the result of two signature formulations. The first, is their Exclusive Cellular Complex, the core ingredient of all La Prairie products and the legacy of the brand’s mastermind Dr. Paul Niehans. It is a formulation so highly-protected that its components are produced in two separate labs and then blended in a third so that no single scientist or chemist has access to the formula.

The second is an exclusive formulation known as the Platinum Multi-Peptide. It is a unique complex of peptides – the building blocks of proteins in the skin like collagen and elastin, which are bound to spherical platinum particles that trigger the skin’s rejuvenation process. This second formulation activates collagen production, strengthens the skin barrier, and refines moisture balance.

La Prairie says that after just eight weeks of applying the Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation Cream, results showed skin lipid content increased by 190% and stem cell proliferation increased by 18%. After just four weeks, there was a decrease in oxidative stress, which reduces skin damage by 38%, an improvement of cell communication and tenfold improvement in pro-collagen and 37% improvement in elastin.

“We manage to work on all visible signs of ageing to ensure our clients will see an augmented moisture level in the skin, a more even skin tone, an enhanced youthful glow, increased firmness and elasticity, restored volume and a refined texture and smoothed wrinkles – all signs of ageing,” shares Belinda.

Williams is famous for many reasons. Chief among them: his talent as a hitmaking producer and recording artist, able to unite the nation’s club revellers and six-year-old Despicable Me fans under one enchanting bass line. But his celebrity has also been accompanied with public fascination about his good looks, which have been on display for decades and somehow have not changed unless they have somehow gotten more imperceptibly handsome with time?

Williams credits this to a love of skincare he has been cultivating since his mid-20s. On set, early in his career, he’d chat up models about the kinds of products they used, and he eventually sought out a dermatologist, Elena Jones, who has treated him since and who consulted on the line.  In Jones’ words, the three Humanrace products – a cleanser, an exfoliant, and a moisturizer – endeavour to fulfil the most basic requirements of a skin-care routine: prepare, repair, protect.

To prepare your face to receive skincare, you wash it. Jones and Pharell might hope that you’ll use Humanrace’s Rice Powder Cleanser, which arrives dry. A dime-sized dusting of the stuff, mixed with water, produces a milky, lightweight emulsion that gently exfoliates using fruit alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), compounds that dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells. Over half of the cleanser formula is kaolin clay, a common skin “detoxifier” mined for centuries for the production of porcelain.

To repair your face from all of the general damage it experiences, you exfoliate, using a chemical peel like the Lotus Enzyme Exfoliant. Formulated foremost with glycolic acid at the relatively high concentration of 8%, the cream invites new and fresh cells to the skin’s surface.

The last product, the Humidifying Cream, is inspired by the downy atmospheres of the places Williams has lived and loved. It is a dense and creamy blanket of moisture, formulated foremost with snow mushroom extract, a moisture-binding organic ingredient with roots in Chinese medicine that behaves similarly to hyaluronic acid (According to board-certified dermatologist Dendy Engelman, however, the snow mushroom particle size is much smaller than that of HA, allowing it to absorb into the skin’s layers more easily.) The cream also contains HA, plus soothing rice water and niacinamide. Pharell is also working on a sunscreen for Humanrace which he says is not available for purchase yet.

The packaging is grass-green in colour and grass-green in sustainability: 50% of the plastic used to house Humanrace’s products comes from post-consumer recycled plastic, with only a small amount of virgin plastic used – and each product has a removable inner chamber that can be exchanged for a refill. The cap is embossed with a raised logo that is nice to run your fingers across and is mirrored with the brand’s name in Braille. Held in your hand, each product has the satisfying heft of a finely crafted thing.

To Williams, a skincare line is more than popping cheekbones and acid-based exfoliation: It is a small, three-minute gesture of self-compassion. He thanks you for your consideration. He hopes you will purchase Humanrace.

The Humanrace skincare line by Pharell, including the Rice Powder Cleanser, Lotus Enzyme Exfoliator, Humidifying Cream, and Routine Pack, will be available beginning November 25 at humanrace.com.
